Underground wastewater treatment plant in Finland to be designed by Poyry
Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY) has awarded consultancy Poyry detailed engineering assignments for the Blominmaki wastewater treatment plant to be built in Espoo, Finland.
The assignments include the structural and architectural design of the treatment plant, electrical, instrumentation and automation design, area planning, and the geotechnical engineering of aboveground structures.
The Blominmaki treatment plant will replace the Suomenoja treatment plant once completed in 2020, and it will treat the wastewater from 400,000 residents.
The Blominmaki treatment plant will be built mainly underground in caverns excavated into bedrock, and the excavation project is already in progress. Actual water treatment will take place underground, according to HSY.
Poyry has prepared rock mechanics and geotechnical designs for the facility at an earlier stage of the project. Design processes under the new assignments started in March 2016.
The value of the order is not disclosed. The order was recognised in the Regional Operations order stock in Q1 2016.
Kari Aalto, president, local industry project services in southern Finland, Poyry, said: "The plant will be designed to be as energy self-sufficient as possible. The digestion of waste sludge produces gas for the production of power and heat. Self-sufficiency is also supported by solar panels, smart lighting solutions and the energy-efficient power supply system. Our electrical, instrumentation and automation design ensures that the different systems work seamlessly together.¡±
