(Artificial Intelligence, Earth Observation, and Advanced Analytics for Mexico’s Water Security and Resilience)’ 프로젝트를 추진하기 위한 협약을 체결했다.

(National Agreement for the Human Right to Water and Sustainability)’의 실행체계 안에서 추진되며, 데이터 과학과 AI를 활용해 멕시코의 물안보를 강화하는 것을 목표로 한다.

Mexico’s National Water Commission and IWMI sign agreement to strengthen water security

Through the partnership, timely, reliable and actionable data will help strengthen Mexico’s water security and resilience efforts.

The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) signed an agreement to implement the project “Artificial Intelligence, Earth Observation, and Advanced Analytics for Mexico’s Water Security and Resilience.”

The agreement builds on a broader collaboration established earlier this year to support joint efforts through 2030, and was signed by Mark Smith, IWMI’s Director General, Paola Félix Díaz, Manager of International Affairs, Claudia Gómez Godoy, Commissioner of the Lerma-Santiago River Sanitation Project, and Margarita Lobato, Water Quality Manager from CONAGUA.

The project falls within the framework of actions of the National Agreement for the Human Right to Water and Sustainability and aims to strengthen Mexico’s water security through data science and artificial intelligence.

Through the project supported by Google.org, CONAGUA and IWMI are collaborating on two action areas aligned with Mexico’s National Water Program 2026–2030 and presidential priorities. This includes improving water quality data analytics and assessing environmental flows and industrial water use demands for the sanitation and restoration of the Lerma-Santiago River Basin.

The project plan includes five technical initiatives focused on integrating cutting-edge tools, including artificial intelligence, satellite data, advanced analytics and real-time dashboards that will help decision-makers evaluate the impact of climate change with more timely and accurate data.

First, through the ongoing collaboration, CONAGUA and IWMI have helped automate quality control for data originating from 5,000 water quality monitoring sites by applying advanced analytics to the National Water Quality Network (RENAMECA). This has significantly reduced the time needed to review, process, visualize and report water quality data.

Second, in Valle de Bravo and Valsequillo, monitoring is conducted weekly, in near real-time, providing complete spatial coverage of the reservoirs through the tracking of nine water quality parameters. This represents a fundamental step forward in the early identification of water risks across reservoirs managed by CONAGUA.

Third, the initiative has also mapped about 61,000 industrial facilities enabling demand estimation and projection down to the municipal scale based on industrial sector classification.

Fourth, over 3,000 river reaches in the Lerma–Santiago Basin were also evaluated using eight climate models across three climate scenarios to assess e-flows.

Finally, satellite monitoring will track water hyacinth coverage on a biweekly basis, while a separate system will monitor riparian vegetation basin-wide and issue early warning alerts when degradation is detected.

The tools developed through this project will enable decision-makers to handle large amounts of data in short periods of time and make more accurate estimates of water quality and quantity to improve planning.

By closing critical information gaps and providing decision-makers with timely, reliable and actionable insights, this project not only enables more effective water management, but also builds and strengthens the institutional capacities of the Mexican government to improve water security and resilience.
