하와이 라하이나 하수처리장(Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility)은 1천400만 달러 규모의 시설 개선을 통해 웨스트 마우이(West Maui’s) 지역의 물공급 미래를 보장하고 있다. 이번 R-1 개선 프로젝트는 혁신성, 지속가능성, 지역사회에 미치는 긍정적 영향을 인정받아 하와이 전문 엔지니어 협회(Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers)가 선정한 ‘2026년 올해의 프로젝트’로 뽑혔다.

1970년대에 건설된 노후 시설을 신뢰할 수 있는 재활용수 공급원으로 탈바꿈시킨 이번 사업은 가뭄, 기후변화, 산불 피해 복구에 어려움을 겪는 지역의 물안보를 강화하고 환경 영향을 줄이고 있다.

변화하는 기후에 맞춘 안정적 물공급

개선된 시설은 이제 골프장, 리조트, 공원, 향후 농업용으로 사용할 수 있는 고품질 재활용수를 안정적으로 공급해 마우이의 제한된 식수 자원에 대한 수요를 줄이고 있다.

처리 과정을 안정화와 유량 변동 제거를 통해 서부 마우이 전역의 일상 운영과 장기 복구 노력에 필요한 신뢰성 씨는 방류수를 생산한다.

후안 리베라(Juan Rivera)  마우이 카운티 하수처리시설 자본 개선 프로그램 관리자는 "이 프로젝트는 의미 있는 진전이다. 재활용수 시스템의 신뢰성을 향상시킴으로써 지역사회에 더 나은 서비스를 제공하고, 천연 자원을 보호하며, 미래를 계획할 수 있게 됐다"라고 말했다.

폐기물 감소와 효율 극대화

이 프로젝트는 주입정(injection wells)에 대한 의존도를 크게 줄이는 동시에 지하수와 해안 생태계를 보호해 마우이의 지속 가능성 목표를 진전시켰다.

기존 저수조와 수로, 인프라를 재활용해 건설 폐기물을 최소화하고 탄소 발자국을 줄이는 동시에 자본 비용을 절감했다. 이러한 접근 방식은 활용도가 낮던 자산을 고성능 시스템으로 전환시켜 장기적인 운영 비용 절감 효과를 제공한다.

데릭 오노(Derek Ono) 제이콥스 부사장은 “우리는 단순히 시설을 개선하는 것을 넘어,  기존 인프라의 가치를 극대화해 더욱 효율적이고 지속 가능하며 탄력적인 시설로 탈바꿈시켰다”고 강조했다.

숨겨진 엔지니어링 안정성

과거에는 변동성이 큰 유량으로 인해 처리 과정이 중단되고 장비가 손상되는 문제가 있었다. 그러나 첨단 공정 모델링과 통합 제어 시스템을 도입한 지금은 펌프, 밸브, 센서를 다층 자동화 시스템으로 동기화해 더욱 스마트하고 적응력 있는 운영이 가능해졌다.

기존 인프라를 탄력적인 물솔루션으로 전환한 이번 수상 경력 프로젝트는 웨스트 마우이 지역이 변화에 적응하고, 회복하며, 번영할 수 있도록 지원한다.

Award-winning upgrade strengthens Hawaiian island’s water future

The Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility improvements project earns top engineering honors for delivering reliable recycled water, reducing environmental impact and strengthening long-term resilience across West Maui

 

 

An award-winning $14 million wastewater upgrade is securing West Maui’s water future. The Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility (WWRF) R-1 Improvements Project was honored as the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers Project of the Year 2026, recognizing its innovation, sustainability and community impact.

By transforming aging 1970s infrastructure into a reliable recycled water source, the project is strengthening water security and reducing environmental impact, supporting a region navigating drought, climate pressures and wildfire recovery.  

Reliable water for a changing climate

The upgraded facility now delivers a consistent supply of high-quality recycled water for golf courses, resorts, public parks and future agricultural use, reducing demand on Maui’s limited potable water resources. 

By stabilizing treatment processes and eliminating damaging flow swings, the system produces dependable effluent that supports both daily operations and long-term recovery efforts across West Maui. 

“This project is a meaningful step forward. By improving the reliability of our recycled water system, we’re better equipped to serve our community, protect our natural resources and plan for the future,” says County of Maui Wastewater Capital Improvement Program Manager Juan Rivera. 

Less waste. More impact.

The project significantly reduces reliance on injection wells, while protecting groundwater and coastal ecosystems, advancing Maui’s sustainability goals. 

By repurposing existing basins, channels and infrastructure, we were able to minimize construction waste and reduce the project’s carbon footprint, while also lowering capital costs. This approach turned underutilized assets into a high-performing system that will continue delivering long-term operational savings.  

“We did more than upgrade a facility — we unlocked the value of infrastructure that was already there, making it more efficient, sustainable and resilient,” emphasizes Jacobs Vice President, Derek Ono. 

Engineering stability behind the scenes

Highly variable flows once disrupted treatment and damaged equipment. Today, advanced process modeling and integrated controls keep the system running smoothly, while a multi-layered automation system synchronizes pumps, valves and sensors, creating a smarter, more adaptable facility.  

By transforming existing infrastructure into a resilient water solution, this award-winning project supports West Maui’s ability to adapt, recover and thrive.
