철염 투입 장치·직물 여과 필터 결합…신종 오염물질 제거 공정 도입

강화된 암모니아 배출 기준 충족 및 지역 생태계 보호에 기여

바할레(Barhale)는 지역 물환경을 보호하기 위해 앵글리안 워터(Anglian Water)의 첫 번째 사이퍼메트린(Cypermethrin) 제거 전용 처리시설을 완공했다고 밝혔다.

이번 사업은 웰링버러(Wellingborough) 인근 라운즈(Raunds) 하수재이용센터에서 진행된 780만 파운드 규모의  3차 처리 투자 프로젝트의 일환으로, 바할레는 강화된 규정을 충족하기 위해 암모니아 처리 시스템을 업그레이드했다.

사이퍼메트린은 최근 수계에서 미량 검출되는 신규 오염물질 중 하나로, 농업·가정·수의학 제품에 널리 사용되는 살충제다. 합법적으로 사용되고 있지만 환경으로 유입될 경우 곤충과 기타 무척추동물에 피해를 줄 수 있다는 우려가 제기되고 있다.

바할레는 앵글이안 워터의  @one Alliance를 통해 수자원공사 및 환경청과 협력해 사이퍼메트린을 극히 낮은 농도까지 제거할 수 있는 처리 공정을 설계했다. 이 공정에는 30m³ 용량의 저장 탱크와 펌프를 갖춘 철염 투입 장치와 이에 맞춰 설계된 직물 여과 필터가 포함된다.

또한 새로운 1.5mg/l 암모니아 배출 기준을 충족하기 위해 바할레는 유연하고 확장 가능한 암모니아 제거 능력을 제공하는 12개의 모듈형 SAF(수중 폭기 필터) 장치를 설치했다. SAF 장치는 전용 송풍기와 새로운 모터 제어 캐비닛으로 안정적인 폭기와 공정 제어를 보장하며, 새로 구축된 중간 단계 펌프장은 3차 처리 공정으로의 유량을 효과적으로 관리한다.

바할레의 전문팀은 현장에서 필요한 모든 구조물 기초와 배관을 완공하고, 전용 유지관리 통로도 마련했다.

앵글리안 워터의 @one Alliance는 회사 전체 자본 투자 프로그램 중 절반 이상을 수행하는 컨설턴트 및 시공사 협력체다.

샤드라흐 페플로프스키(Szadrach Peplowski) 바할레의 현장 관리자에 따르면, 라운즈의 3차 처리시설 개선은 강화되는 환경 규제와 신규 오염물질이라는 이중 과제에 앵글리안 워터와 @one Alliance가 어떻게 대응하고 있는지를 보여준다.

그는 "이번 공사가 오늘날 규제 준수를 확실히 보장하는 동시에 사이퍼메트린과 같은 수계 오염물질을 처리할 수 있는 새로운 기술을 도입했다"고 말했다. 이어 "@one Alliance는 라운즈가 앞으로도 회복력을 유지하며 규제 요건을 충족하는 동시에 노스햄프턴셔의 강과 생태계를 오랫동안 보호할 수 있는 기술을 제공하는 해결책을 마련했다"고 강조했다.

Barhale completes Anglian Water’s first plant tackling emerging contaminant Cypermethrin

 

Barhale has completed construction of Anglian Water’s first treatment plant designed to remove the pesticide Cypermethrin and protect the local water environment. 

The works form part of an integrated £7.8M investment in tertiary treatment at Raunds Water Recycling Centre near Wellingborough. Barhale also upgraded the site’s ammonia treatment systems to ensure compliance with more stringent legislation. 

Cypermethrin is one of several emerging contaminants now detected in trace quantities in watercourses. The pesticide is widely used in agricultural, domestic and veterinary products. Although its use is legal, concerns remain that it can enter the wider environment and harm insects and other invertebrates. 

Civil engineering, infrastructure and tunnelling specialist Barhale worked through Anglian Water’s @one Alliance in collaboration with the water company and the Environment Agency to design a treatment process capable of removing Cypermethrin to very low concentrations. It includes a purpose-designed cloth filter supported by a ferric dosing package with a 30m³ storage tank and downstream dosing pumps. 

To meet the new 1.5mg/l ammonia consent, Barhale installed 12 modular nitrifying SAF (Submerged Aerated Filter) units to provide flexible and scalable ammonia removal capacity. The SAF units were supported by dedicated blowers and a new motor control cabinet to ensure reliable aeration and process control. A new interstage pumping station helps manage flows to the tertiary process. 

Barhale’s team of specialists also completed all necessary structural bases and pipework and constructed dedicated maintenance access routes across the site. 

Anglian Water’s @one Alliance is a collaboration of consultants and contractors delivering more than half of the company’s capital investment programme. 

According to Szadrach Peplowski, Site Manager, Barhale, the tertiary treatment upgrades at Raunds demonstrate how Anglian Water and the @one Alliance are responding to the twin challenges of tightening environmental regulation and emerging contaminants.  

“The works provide robust compliance today while introducing new technology to address contaminants such as Cypermethrin in watercourses,” he said. 

“The @one Alliance has delivered a solution that keeps Raunds resilient and meeting requirements while providing the technology needed to protect Northamptonshire’s rivers and wildlife for many years.”
