[사우디] ACWA, '2026 글로벌 워터 어워드'서 ‘올해의 담수화 기업·플랜트상’ 동시 수상

하루 970만㎥ 담수 처리 역량… 세계 최대 민간 해수 담수화 기업으로 입지 강화

세계 최대 민간 해수 담수화 기업이자 에너지 전환의 선두주자이며, 대규모 친환경 수소 생산의 개척자인 ACWA는 스페인 마드리드에서 열린 '2026 글로벌 워터 어워드( Global Water Awards) 시상식에서 '올해의 해수 담수화 기업'과 '올해의 해수 담수화 플랜트' 상을 동시에 수상했다고 밝혔다.

이번 수상을 통해 ACWA는 글로벌 물 분야에서의 리더십과 운영 우수성을 다시 한번 국제적으로 인정받았으며, 안정적이고 지속 가능하며 경제적인 대규모 물솔루션을 제공하는 탁월한 역량을 입증했다.

글로벌 워터 인텔리전스(GWI)가 주최하는 '글로벌 워터 어워드'는 2006년부터 국제 물산업 전반에서 우수성을 평가하는 대표적인 시상식으로 자리매김해왔다. 담수화, 하수처리, 디지털 혁신, 지속 가능한 금융 등 세계 물관리 방식을 재편하는 프로젝트, 기업, 개인을 15개 부문에서 선정해 시상하고 있다.

 야시르 마흐무드(Yasir Mahmoud) ACWA의의 글로벌 수자원 부문 부사장은 “올해의 담수화 기업상과 플랜트상을 동시에 수상한 것은 에너지 집약도 절감, 가동률 향상, 스마트한 금융 전략을 특징으로 하는 ACWA의 모델이 효과적이라는 가장 확실한 증거"라며 "우리는 수년간 역삼투압(RO) 기술을 발전시켜 이제는 경제적일 뿐 아니라 더 깨끗하고, 더 안정적이며, 새로운 시장으로 확장할 수 있는 단계에 도달했다”고 말했다.

이번 수상은 ACWA의 수자원 포트폴리오가 빠르게 성장하고 있는 시점에 이뤄졌다. 대표 사업인 라비그 3 독립형 담수화 프로젝트(Rabigh 3 Independent Water Project)는 메카 지역에 하루 60만m³ 규모의 해수 역삼투압 플랜트로 물을 공급하며, 99% 이상의 가동률을 꾸준히 유지해 왔다. 또한 최근에는 IFC 블루 파이낸스 가이드라인에 부합하는 획기적인 재융자를 성공적으로 완료했는데, 이는 ACWA가 해당 기준을 준수해 진행한 첫 사례다.

현재 ACWA는 운영 중이거나 개발 및 건설 단계에 있는 총 109개 자산을 보유하고 있으며, 전 포트폴리오에 걸쳐 배출량과 비용을 절감하는 차세대 해수 담수화 기술을 지속적으로 도입하고 있다. 이는 사우디의 비전 2030 달성과 중동, 아프리카, 중앙아시아, 동남아시아 등 파트너 국가들의 물안보 목표 달성을 지원하기 위함이다.

ACWA는 사우디를 포함한 6개국에서 담수화 자산을 개발, 소유 또는 운영하고 있으며, 여러 시장에서 프로젝트 파이프라인을 확대하고 있다. 안정적이고 지속 가능한 물인프라에 대한 수요가 증가하는 가운데, ACWA는 합리적인 가격의 안정적인 식수 공급을 제공하고 글로벌 해수 담수화 사업 영역을 확장하며 검증된 전문성을 새로운 지역으로 확산하는 데 최선을 다하고 있다.

Acwa Recognized as a Global Leader in Water at the 2026 Global Water Awards in Madrid

 

Acwa swept the 2026 Global Water Awards, taking both ‘Desalination Company of the Year’ and ‘Desalination Plant of the Year’ - cementing its standing as the world’s largest private water desalination company with 9.7 million m³/day under management.

Acwa, the world’s largest private water desalination company, a leader in the energy transition, and a first mover into green hydrogen at scale, has been named Desalination Company of the Year and Desalination Plant of the Year at the 2026 Global Water Awards ceremony in Madrid, marking further international recognition of Acwa’s global water leadership and operational excellence delivering reliable, sustainable, and affordable water solutions at scale.

Organized by Global Water Intelligence (GWI), the Global Water Awards have, since 2006, served as the benchmark for excellence across the international water sector. Across 15 categories, they recognize the projects, companies and individuals reshaping how the world manages water - from desalination and wastewater treatment to digital innovation and sustainable financing.

The company’s flagship Rabigh 3 Independent Water Project — a 600,000 m³/day seawater reverse osmosis plant serving the Makkah region — has consistently delivered availability levels above 99%, and recently completed a landmark refinancing aligned with IFC Blue Finance Guidelines, the company’s first such alignment. 

Across its wider portfolio of 109 assets in operation, advanced development, or under construction, Acwa continues to integrate next-generation desalination technologies that reduce both emissions and costs, in support of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the water security ambitions of partner countries across the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia.
