[영국] 스코티시 워터, 상수도용 태양광 도입해 재생에너지 공급 확대

로헤드 펌프장, 태양광 패널 통해 재생에너지 0.15GWh 생산…연간 이산화탄소 배출량 28톤 절감

스코티시 워터(Scottish Water)는 페니퀵(Penicuik) 지역에 태양광 발전 시스템을 도입해 필수적인 상수도 서비스 제공에 필요한 전력을 공급하고 있다고 밝혔다. 

스코티시 워터는 탄소배출량을 줄이고 전력망 의존도를 낮추기 위해 태양광 발전 시스템을 도입하고 있다. 이를 통해 스코티시 워터는 자체 재생에너지 생산량을 늘림으로써 운영 비용을 절감하고 에너지 안정성을 향상시키는 한편, 전기 가격 변동에 대한 장기적인 대비책을 마련하고 있다.

이 프로젝트는 페니퀵 소재 로헤드(Lawhead) 정수 펌프장에 372개의 탱크 및 지상 설치형 태양광 패널을 설치해 연간 약 0.15GWh의 재생에너지를 생산할 것으로 예상된다.

생산된 재생에너지의 약 67%는 현장에서 직접 사용돼 펌프장 전체 에너지 수요의 27%를 충족하며, 잉여 전력은 국가 전력망으로 송전되어 재생에너지를 더 폭넓게 활용할 수 있게 됐다.

이 프로젝트는 매년 약 28톤의 이산화탄소 배출량을 절감해 펌프장 운영의 탄소 배출량을 줄이고, 2040년까지 탄소중립 달성하려는 스코티시 워터의 목표 달성에 기여한다.

이 태양광 발전 설비는 엠텍 에너지(Emtec Energy)가 시공했으며, 스코티시 워터 호라이즌스(Scottish Water Horizons)가 공공 수도사업자인 스코티시 워터를 대신해 프로젝트를 주도했다.

벤 앤더슨(Ben Anderson) 스코티시 워터 호라이즌스 프로젝트 담당자는 “로헤드 펌프장에 설치된 이 태양광 발전 설비가 가동되어 필요한 곳에 직접 재생 에너지를 생산할 수 있게 되어 매우 기쁘다”라면서 “이러한 프로젝트는 탄소 배출량을 줄이는 동시에 스코틀랜드 워터의 여러 사업장 전반에 걸쳐 장기적인 에너지 안정성을 향상시키는 데 중요한 역할을 한다”고 말했다.

스튜어트 스캐멀(Stuart Scammell) 스코티시 워터 운영팀장인 은 “로헤드 펌프장은 안정적인 물 공급을 위해 24시간 내내 가동되므로 에너지 사용량은 매우 중요한 요소다. 이제 펌프장 전력의 4분의 1 이상을 재생 에너지로 충당하게 된 것은 탄소 배출량을 줄이는 동시에 이 중요한 시설의 안정성을 강화하는 긍정적인 조치다”라고 말했다.

로헤드 펌프장 태양광 발전 프로젝트는 스코틀랜드 전역의 고객에게 더욱 친환경적이고 안정적인 서비스를 제공하기 위해 스코티시 워터 사업장 전반에 걸쳐 진행되는 광범위한 재생 에너지 투자 프로그램의 일환이다.

Solar Scheme Helping Power Scottish Water Services for Penicuik

 

A new solar scheme is now helping to power essential water services for Scottish Water customers in Penicuik, cutting carbon emissions and reducing reliance on grid electricity. 

The project has seen 372 tank and ground mounted solar panels installed at Lawhead Treated Water Pumping Station on the outskirts of the town which are expected to generate around 0.15GWh of green electricity each year. 

Around 67 per cent of the renewable energy generated will be used directly on site, meeting 27 per cent of the pumping station’s total energy demand. Any surplus power will be exported to the national grid, making renewable energy available for wider use. 

By generating more of its own power on site, the scheme will help lower operational costs, improve energy resilience, and provide long‑term protection against the volatility of electricity prices.  

The project will also save around 28 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year, making the operation of the pumping station less carbon intensive and supporting Scottish Water’s drive to reach net zero emissions by 2040. 

The solar scheme has been delivered by Emtec Energy, with the project led by Scottish Water Horizons on behalf of the publicly owned utility. 

Ben Anderson, Scottish Water Horizons Project Manager, said: “It is great to see this solar scheme now operational at Lawhead, helping us to generate renewable energy directly where it is needed. 

“Projects like this play an important role in reducing carbon emissions while improving long-term energy resilience across our network of sites.” 

Stuart Scammell, Scottish Water Operations Team Leader, added: “The Lawhead pumping station operates around the clock to help deliver reliable water services, so energy use is a significant factor. 

“Having more than a quarter of the site’s electricity now coming from renewable energy is a positive step, reducing carbon emissions while supporting the resilience of this vital asset.” 

The Lawhead project forms part of a wider programme of renewable energy investment being delivered across Scottish Water sites to make the services it provides greener and more resilient for customers across Scotland.
