환경 정보 제공 핵심 기관인 AEM 현지시각 1월 5일 '2025 미국 번개 보고서(2025 U.S. Lightning Report)의 일부 내용을 사전 공개했다.

여기에는 오클라호마에는 1.6㎢(제곱마일) 당 73회의 번개가 발해 플로리다를 제치고 번개 집중도 최다 지역이 됐다는 내용 등이 담겼다.

업계 최고의 정확도를 자랑하 번개 탐지 네트워크인 AEM의 '어스 네트워크 토탈 라이트닝 네트워크(Earth Networks Total Lightning Network®)'에 따르면 2025년 미국 전역에서 8천840만 번의 번개 중 약 4억3천만 번의 번개 전자파 펄스를 감지했으며, 이는 2025년 대비 9.8% 증가한 수치다.

번개 집중도는 오클라호마가 가장 높았지만 번개의 발생량과 강도 측면에서는 텍사스가 우위를 점했다. 텍사스에서는 1천300만 건 이상의 번개가 발생해 평년 대비 130만 건 증가했다. 또한 번개의 위험도를 나타내는 AEM의 지표인 '번개 위험 경보(DTAs)'가 가장 많이 발령됐다. 

엘리자베스 디강기(Elizabeth DiGangi) AEM 번개 과학자 겸 박사는 "오클라호마의 번개 발생 순위 상승은 지난 몇 년에 비해 2025년 날씨 패턴에 큰 변화를 가져왔다"면서 "얼스 네트워크 토탈 라이트닝 네트워크는 뛰어난 적용 범위와 정밀도로 번개 활동을 포착하기 때문에, 오클라호마가 높은 영향을 미치는 폭풍이 점점 더 활발한 지역으로 부상하는 등 번개 패턴이 어떻게 진화하고 있는지 알 수 있다"고 말했다.

2025 미국 낙뢰 보고서 주요 내용은 다음과 같다.

섬광 밀도 기준 상위 주(Top States by Flash Density): 오클라호마가 1.6㎢당 73회의 섬광으로 1위를 차지했고 플로리다, 루이지애나, 캔자스가 뒤를 이었다.

섬광 밀도 기준 상위 카운티(Top County by Flash Density): 오클라호마주 케이 카운티는 1.6㎢당 123.4회의 섬광으로 전국 1위를 차지했다.

번개 최다 발생일(Peak Lightning Day): 6월 15일은 전국적으로 92만9천16회의 번개가 기록되어 연중 가장 번개가 많이 쳤다.

공항 영향(Airport Impacts): 세계에서 가장 바쁜 공항인 하츠필드-잭슨 애틀랜타 국제공항은 1만 개 이상의 번개 섬광으로 경쟁했다. 미국에서 가장 바쁜 10개 공항 중 8개 공항은 여름철 여행 성수기에 번개가 치는 날을 경험했다.

관광 명소 노출(Tourist Landmark Exposure): 시카고의 밀레니엄 파크는 1만1천 회 이상의 번개에 노출되어 미국에서 가장 인기 있는 관광 명소 중 가장 많은 번개를 경험했다. 전국에서 가장 많이 방문하는 관광 명소의 절반은 관광객이 가장 많은 6월에서 8월 사이에 번개가 가장 많이 쳤다.

경기장 노출(Stadium Exposure): 좌석 수 기준으로 미국에서 가장 큰 10개 경기장 중 번개에 가장 많이 노출된 세 곳은 타이거 스타디움, 카일 필드, 코튼 볼로, 모두 SEC 소속 경기장이다. 네일랜드 스타디움은 테네시 대학교의 시즌 두 번째 미식축구 경기가 열린 지 며칠 만인 9월 4일에 번개가 가장 많이 발생했다.

이 보고서는 또한 번개가 가장 많이 치는 날과 수십억 달러 규모의 재해 사이에 우려스러운 상관관계가 있음을 보여준다. 아칸소주는 4월 2일에 번개가 가장 많이 쳤는데, 이는 파괴적인 토네이도 발생과 일치했다.

위스콘신주의 번개 최고치는 5월 15일에 발생했으며, 이는 수십억 달러 규모의 토네이도 및 폭풍 재해의 시작을 알리는 신호였다. 텍사스주는 5월 26일, 각각 수십억 달러 규모의 재해가 발생한 두 지역에서 최고 낙뢰 발생량을 기록했다.

AEM Releases 2025 U.S. Lightning Report: Oklahoma Dethrones Florida as America’s Lightning Concentration Capital

Historic Shift as Great Plains Emerges as New Epicenter of Severe Storm Activity

 AEM, the essential source for environmental insights, today released its 2025 U.S. Lightning Report, revealing that Oklahoma has dethroned Florida to become the nation’s lightning concentration capital. With approximately 73 flashes per square mile, Oklahoma displaced the state that has traditionally dominated this ranking, signaling a broader surge in lightning activity across the Great Plains.

Overall, AEM’s Earth Networks Total Lightning Network® detected nearly 430 million lightning pulses within 88.4 million lightning flashes across the U.S. in 2025, a 9.8% increase from the prior year.

While Oklahoma led in lightning concentration, Texas dominated in sheer volume and storm intensity. The state recorded more than 13 million lightning flashes, exceeding its historical average by 1.3 million.

As an additional indicator of storm severity derived from lightning behavior, Texas also registered the highest number of Dangerous Thunderstorm Alerts (DTAs), a proprietary AEM metric that flags periods of exceptionally intense lightning rates associated with severe storms and provides an early signal of rapidly intensifying thunderstorm activity.

Overall, the Great Plains accounted for roughly half of the top 10 states with the most intense lightning storms, underscoring the region’s reputation as a severe weather hotspot.

“Oklahoma’s rise to the top of our lightning rankings represents a significant shift in 2025’s weather patterns compared with past years,” said Dr. Elizabeth DiGangi, a lightning scientist at AEM.

“Because ENTLN captures lightning activity with exceptional coverage and precision, we can see how lightning patterns are evolving, with the Great Plains emerging as an increasingly active region for high-impact storms.”

Key Findings from the 2025 Report

Top States by Flash Density: Oklahoma claimed the top position with 73 flashes per square mile, followed by Florida, Louisiana, and Kansas.

Top County by Flash Density: Kay County, Oklahoma, led the nation with 123.4 flashes per square mile.

Peak Lightning Day: June 15 was the most lightning-intense day of the year with 929,016 flashes recorded nationwide.

Airport Impacts: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest airport, contended with more than 10,000 lightning flashes. Eight of the 10 busiest U.S. airports experienced their peak lightning day during the height of summer travel season.

Tourist Landmark Exposure: Chicago’s Millennium Park was exposed to more than 11,000 lightning flashes, more than any other top-visited U.S. landmark. Half of the nation’s most-visited landmarks experienced peak lightning between June and August, when visitor traffic is highest.

Stadium Exposure: Among the nation’s 10 largest stadiums by seating capacity, the three with the highest lightning exposure were Tiger Stadium, Kyle Field, and the Cotton Bowl, all SEC venues. Neyland Stadium experienced its peak lightning on September 4, within days of hosting the University of Tennessee’s second football game of the season.

The report also documents a troubling correlation between peak lightning days and billion-dollar disasters. Arkansas experienced its highest lightning activity on April 2, coinciding with a devastating tornado outbreak. Wisconsin’s peak on May 15 marked the start of a billion-dollar tornado and storm event. Texas recorded its peak lightning day on May 26 at the intersection of two separate billion-dollar disasters.

Data for the 2025 report was captured by AEM’s Earth Networks Total Lightning Network (ENTLN), the world’s most comprehensive global lightning detection network. ENTLN’s more than 1,800 sensors provide real-time detection and analysis that helps organizations better understand lightning risk and storm evolution.
