미국 탬파베이 담수화 시설(Tampa Bay Desalination Plant)은 스페인의 글로벌 물·환경 기업인 악시오나(ACCIONA)가 주도한 포괄적인 현대화 공사를 완료하여 10여 년 만에 최고 생산량을 달성했다. 이번 시설 개선을 통해 담수화 시설의 전체 운영 용량을 복구하고 지역의 장기적인 물 안보에 대한 기여도를 높였다.

미국 플로리다주 탬파베이 지역의 260만 명 이상에게 깨끗한 식수를 공급하는 대규모 지역 상수도 기관인 탬파베이 워터(Tampa Bay Water)는 A2023년 악시오나 경영진에 대한 신뢰를 재확인하며 담수화 시설의 운영 및 유지보수 계약을 2024년에서 2029년으로 5년 연장했다. 이 중요한 사건은 신뢰성, 효율성, 그리고 성능에 중점을 둔 야심 찬 재개발 프로그램의 촉매제가 되었다.

2024년에 수행된 현대화 작업에는 8개의 역삼투압 랙(Reverse Osmosis Rack)을 모두 해체하고 그 중 5개를 스테인리스 스틸로 재건하여 수명을 25년 이상 연장하고 장기 부식 저항성을 개선하는 것이 포함되었다.

악시오나는 또한 840개의 압력 용기를 교체하고, 배관망 구간을 개선하고, 운영 및 유지보수를 최적화하기 위한 첨단 디지털 제어 시스템을 도입했다.

이러한 개선을 통해 핵심 인프라를 현대화하고 향후 수십 년간 플랜트의 운영 신뢰성을 보장하여 탬파 베이 지역 주민들에게 지속적인 서비스와 식수 생산을 지원할 수 있었다. 그 결과, 완공 후 첫 9개월 동안 플랜트는 10년 만에 최고 용량으로 가동되었다.

Tampa Bay desalination plant reaches record output with ACCIONA modernization

Modernization works strengthen efficiency and reliability of Florida’s largest desalination facility

Tampa Bay Desalination Plant has achieved its highest production levels in more than a decade following the completion of a comprehensive modernization led by ACCIONA. The upgrades have restored the facility’s full operating capacity and enhanced its contribution to the region’s long-term water security.

In 2023, Tampa Bay Water reaffirmed its confidence in ACCIONA’s management by extending the plant’s operation and maintenance contract by five years, from 2024 until 2029. The milestone served as the catalyst for an ambitious redevelopment program focused on reliability, efficiency, and performance.

The modernization works, carried out in 2024, included dismantling all eight reverse osmosis racks and rebuilding five of them in stainless steel, extending their lifespan by more than 25 years, and improving long-term corrosion resistance. 

ACCIONA also replaced 840 pressure vessels, upgraded sections of the piping network, and introduced advanced digital control systems to optimize operations and maintenance.

These improvements have modernized a critical infrastructure and ensured the plant’s operational reliability for decades to come, supporting continuous service and the production of drinking water for the Tampa Bay community.

As a result, in the first nine months following completion, the plant operated at its highest capacity in more than a decade.

KEY PROJECTS

ACCIONA has a growing presence in the U.S. infrastructure sector, delivering innovative, technology-driven solutions across a range of major projects.

In Louisiana, ACCIONA is leading the design and construction of the Calcasieu River Bridge, a critical infrastructure upgrade that will enhance connectivity and safety along Interstate 10. 

The project incorporates advanced engineering solutions to improve traffic flow and resilience, ensuring long-term durability for one of the region’s key transport corridors.

In Georgia, ACCIONA is developing the SR 400 Express Lanes Project, a major expansion designed to reduce congestion and improve mobility across the greater Atlanta area.

Beyond transport infrastructure, ACCIONA is also advancing innovation in water treatment and supply. Aside from the Tampa Bay plant, in California the company will design, build and operate and maintain the Doheny Ocean Desalination Plant in Orange County - a state-of-the-art facility that will strengthen local water supply resilience and provide a reliable source of drinking water for the region.
