[영국] 사우스웨스트워터, 영국 남서부 자선단체 빗물 재활용 프로젝트 지원

연간 25만리터 물 절약…지역사회와 환경 모두 챙기는 지속가능 프로젝트

영국 상수도 기업 사우스웨스트워터(South West Water)가 콘월 지역 자선단체 글렌카른(Glen Carne)의 빗물 수집 프로젝트를 지원한다. 이 프로젝트는 사우스웨스트워터의 ‘물 절약 커뮤니티 펀드(Water-Saving Community Fund)’를 통해 이루어졌다.

폴 도멧(Paul Dommett) 사우스웨스트워터 물 효율 관리 책임자는 “글렌카른의 빗물 수집 프로젝트를 지원하게 되어 기쁘다. 이를 통해 자선단체는 매년 수십만 리터의 정수된 물을 절약하고, 지역 취약계층 지원에 더 집중할 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.

이번 지원으로 글렌카른은 두 개 대형 건물의 빗물을 수집·여과할 지하 탱크를 설치한다. 수집된 빗물은 화장실 세척과 세탁기 사용에 재활용되며, 연간 약 25만8천550리터(약 258㎥)의 정수된 물을 절약할 것으로 예상된다. 탱크가 가득 찰 경우 남는 물은 시설 내 야생동물 연못에 보충된다.

매트 가반(Matt Gavan) 글렌카른 CEO는 “사우스웨스트워터의 지원 덕분에 환경 영향 감소, 공과금 절감, 그리고 거주자 지원 서비스 투자 확대라는 세 가지 효과를 얻을 수 있게 됐다”고 밝혔다.

사우스웨스트워터의 ‘물 절약 커뮤니티 펀드’는 2021년 출범 이후 지역 비영리 단체와 커뮤니티 그룹의 물 절약·지속가능성·지역사회 강화 프로젝트를 지원해왔으며, 지난해에는 21개 프로젝트를 통해 270만 리터 이상의 물을 절약했다.

이번 프로젝트를 통해 사우스웨스트워터는 지역사회와 환경 모두에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 지속가능한 물 관리 모델을 제시할 것으로 기대된다.

South West Water supports Cornwall charity’s project to harvest rainwater

A charity which provides accommodation and support to single people in Cornwall, is set to boost its rainwater harvesting capabilities thanks to funding from South West Water’s Water-Saving Community Fund. 

Based in St Agnes, Glen Carne is a charity which houses 35 residents who may otherwise face homelessness, many referred by local agencies such as Cornwall Council, homeless charities and mental health teams. Each resident has their own room, with shared cooking and laundry facilities which currently use metered water. 

Thanks to support from South West Water’s Water-Saving Community Fund, the charity is installing a new underground tank to collect and filter rainwater from two large buildings. 

This will then be reused for flushing toilets and running washing machines at its site, saving an estimated 258,550 litres of treated water every year. When the tank is full, any excess water will be used to top up the site’s wildlife pond, home to ducks and other species. 

Matt Gavan, CEO of Glen Carne, said: “We are incredibly grateful to South West Water for supporting this important project. The new rainwater harvesting system will help us reduce our environmental impact, lower utility costs, and invest more into the support and services we provide to our residents. It’s a practical and sustainable improvement that will benefit both people and the environment.”

Paul Dommett, Water Efficiency Delivery Manager at South West Water, added: “We’re delighted to support Glen Carne with their rainwater harvesting project. 

“By harvesting rainwater, the charity will save hundreds of thousands of litres of treated water every year and be able to focus even more on the vital work it does supporting vulnerable people in Cornwall.” 

Since its launch in 2021, South West Water’s Water-Saving Community Fund has supported local not-for-profit organisations and community groups with projects that promote sustainability, conserve water, and strengthen local communities.
