미국 환경보호청(EPA)이 애리조나(Arizona)주 내 광산 지구에서 발생한 폐우라늄 광산 오염을 정화하기 위해 본격적인 제거 작업에 나선다. 이번 조치는 리틀콜로라도(Little Colorado)강의 수질과 인디언 보호구역인 나바호(Navajo) 원주민들의 안전을 지키는 데 목적이 있다.

EPA는 두 곳의 폐광과 세 번째 광산 일부에서 나온 폐기물을 강에서 약 1마일(약 1.6㎞) 떨어진 현장 보관소로 옮길 예정이다. 이를 통해 방사능 오염의 영향을 최소화하고, 장기간 지역사회와 수계 전반을 위협해온 과거 광산 활동이 남긴 오염 문제를 줄인다는 방침이다.

마이크 몽고메리(Mike Montgomery) EPA 태평양 남서부 지역 슈퍼펀드 부서 국장은 “이번 발표는 지역 폐우라늄 광산 정화에서 중요한 진전”이라며 “폐기물을 강에서 안전하게 이전해 나바호 지역사회와 유역 전체의 오염 영향을 줄일 수 있다”고 말했다.

캐런 피터스(Karen Peters) 애리조나주 환경품질부 국장도 “EPA의 노력에 감사드리며 앞으로도 주민 보호를 위해 긴밀히 협력하겠다”고 밝혔다. EPA는 이번 조치를 추진하면서 애리조나주 환경품질부와 협력해 공공 자원을 보호하고 지역 이해관계자들의 요구를 반영했다고 설명했다.

정화 작업은 2026년 설계 과정을 시작으로 본격화된다. 폐기물은 보관소로 안전하게 옮겨지고, 인체와 환경에 해를 끼칠 수 있는 방사선 노출도 차단된다. 작업이 끝나면 광산 부지는 자연 상태로 복원돼 강의 주요 서식지와 문화 자원을 보호할 예정이다.

새롭게 조성되는 보관소는 향후 카메론 광산 지구 내 다른 폐우라늄 광산에서 발생하는 폐기물도 수용할 수 있어, 추가 정화 작업을 보다 효율적으로 진행할 수 있는 기반이 될 전망이다.

EPA Protects the Little Colorado River from Impacts of Abandoned Uranium Mines, Announces Removal Action to Advance Cleanup of Contamination

Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a removal action decision that will protect the Little Colorado River from uranium contamination by safely moving mine waste from two abandoned uranium mines and a portion of a third into an on-site repository one mile from the river.

The Section 9 Lease Mine Site is located in Coconino County, Arizona, and is adjacent to the Little Colorado River in the Cameron Mining District near the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation. EPA coordinated closely with the State of Arizona’s Department of Environmental Quality to ensure the protection of public resources and the consideration of local stakeholder priorities.

“Today’s announcement marks major progress on the cleanup of abandoned uranium mines in the region,” said EPA Pacific Southwest Region Superfund Division Director Mike Montgomery. “By safely relocating this waste away from the Little Colorado River, we’re reducing the footprint of legacy uranium contamination in Navajo communities and throughout the watershed.”

“I applaud EPA’s efforts to address legacy uranium mine waste issues in Arizona and look forward to our ongoing partnership to protect Arizona residents,” said Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Director Karen Peters.

The removal design process is estimated to commence in 2026 and will safely remove and relocate waste to the repository, while protecting human health and the environment from ionizing radiation caused by historic mining activities. Once removal is complete, the former mine areas will be restored to natural conditions, protecting the river’s critical habitat and important cultural resources.

The new repository may also serve as a regional repository for waste from other abandoned uranium mines in the Cameron Mining District, streamlining future cleanup efforts in the region.
