아랍에미레이트(UAE) 두바이 수전력청(Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, 이하 ‘DEWA’)은 스마트 볼 기술(Smart Ball Technology)을 통해 기존 기술로는 감지하기 어려운 지하 수도관의 누수를 감지하여 134만 세제곱미터(㎥)의 누수를 예방, 2024년에 1천200만 디르함(AED, 약 47억 4천700만 원)을 절약했다고 4월 8일 밝혔다.

이 혁신적인 기술은 2021년 4월 채택된 이후 2024년 말까지 두바이의 급수관에서 180건의 누수를 감지했다. 스마트 볼(Smart Ball) 기술은 급수관의 작은 균열이 더 커져 더 큰 물 낭비를 초래하기 전에 해결하여 운영비용을 절감할 수 있다.

DEWA의 사이드 모하메드 알 테이어(HE Saied Mohammed Al Tayer) MD 겸 CEO는 “ ‘두바이 통합 수자원 관리 전략 2030(Dubai Integrated Water Resource Management Strategy 2030)’에 따라 혁신(Innovation), 최신 기술(Latest Technologies), 스마트 및 디지털 시스템(Smart and Digital System)을 채택하여 수자원 네트워크의 효율성과 신뢰성을 높이고 두바이의 빠른 성장을 충족하기 위한 혁신적인 경험을 개발하고 있다”고 강조했다.

알 테이어 CEO는 이어 “우리의 노력은 전 세계적으로 물 손실을 줄이는 데 있어 DEWA의 우수성을 공고히 하는 결과를 가져왔다”면서 “DEWA는 유럽과 미국의 저명한 기업들을 능가하는 경쟁력 있는 성과를 거두어 2024년에는 물 네트워크 손실이 4.5%로 감소했다”고 말했다.

DEWA의 압둘라 오바이둘(Abdullah Obaidullah) 물 및 토목 담당 부사장은 “DEWA의 간부들은 24시간 수도망을 모니터링할 수 있는 혁신적이고 자동화된 시스템을 개발했다. 우리는 스마트 그리드(Smart Grid)를 활용하여 파괴적이고 4차 산업혁명적인 기술을 사용하여 시설과 서비스를 관리할 수 있는 최첨단 인프라를 구축했다”고 강조했다.

스마트 볼 시스템은 고감도 음향 센서가 장착된 소구경 구체(Small Diameter Sphere)로 구성되어 있으며, 상수도망에 삽입되어 물의 흐름에 따라 자유롭게 움직이다. 이 구체는 누수로 발생하는 소리를 감지하고 고유한 특성을 가진 가스 포켓(Gas Pocket)이나 이상 징후를 식별한다.

스마트 볼이 추출되면 수집된 데이터는 누수, 가스 포켓 또는 이상 징후의 정확한 위치를 보여주는 수학적 알고리즘을 사용하여 소프트웨어로 분석된다. 스마트 볼은 수도관 내부를 시속 약 3km로 이동하며 물 흐름에 영향을 주지 않고 하루에 35km 이상을 검사할 수 있다.

Smart Ball technology detects the smallest leaks in underground pipelines

Smart Ball technology helped Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) save AED 12 million in 2024 after preventing the loss of 1.34 million cubic metres of water by detecting leaks in underground pipelines, which are usually difficult to detect using traditional techniques. 

Since its adoption in April 2021 up until the end of 2024, the innovative technology detected 180 leaks in the water transmission network in Dubai. This technology reduces operational expenses as small cracks in water pipelines are addressed before they increase in size and cause further water wastage.

“In line with the Dubai Integrated Water Resource Management Strategy 2030, we adopt innovation, the latest technologies and smart and digital systems to develop innovative experiences to increase the efficiency and reliability of water networks and meet Dubai's accelerated growth” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“Our efforts have resulted in the consolidation of DEWA’s excellence worldwide in reducing water losses. DEWA has achieved competitive results that surpass prominent European and American companies. In 2024, water network losses were reduced to 4.5%” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

Abdullah Obaidullah, Executive Vice President of Water & Civil at DEWA, said: “DEWA’s cadres have developed innovative and automated systems to monitor the network around the clock. We utilise the smart grid to develop state-of-the-art infrastructure for managing facilities and services using disruptive and Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies.”

The Smart Ball system consists of a small diameter sphere with a highly sensitive acoustic sensor that is inserted into the water network, where it travels freely, driven by the water flow. It detects sounds generated by leaks and identifies gas pockets or anomalies, which have unique characteristics. 

Once the Smart Ball is extracted, the compiled data is analysed by software using mathematical algorithms showing the precise location of leaks, gas pockets or anomalies. The Smart Ball travels inside transmission pipes at around three kilometres per hour and can inspect over 35km in one day without affecting water flow.
