스코틀랜드 수자원공사(Scottish Water)가 에든버러에서 진행한 주요 공사 현장에서 촬영된 영상을 통해 도시의 하수관망 운영에 핵심적인 지하 설비의 특별한 모습이 공개되었다. 이 공기업은 최근 맥도널드 로드 하수 펌프장(McDonald Road Waste Water Pumping Station)에 5백만 파운드를 투자해 9톤 무게의 스크류 펌프를 지하 챔버에 설치했다.

이 펌프장은 대형 아르키메데스(Archimedean) 스크류 펌프를 활용해 수백만 리터의 하수를 도시 전역으로 이동시킨다. 50년 이상 가동된 이 시설은 도시 하수 시스템의 효율성과 안정성을 유지하기 위해 대규모 개보수 작업을 진행 중이다.

공개된 영상에는 브로튼 초등학교(Broughton Primary School) 인근에서 14.4미터 길이의 스크류 펌프를 지하로 내리는 크레인 작업이 담겨 있다. 이 펌프는 초당 1천800리터의 물을 처리할 수 있는 능력을 갖추고 있다. 이번에 설치된 스크류 펌프는 2024년 10월에 철거된 기존 펌프를 대체하는 것으로, 맥도널드 로드 지하에 있는 두 개의 스크류 펌프 중 하나다.

‘오수 스크류‘ 또는 ‘주 스크류’라고 불리는 이 장비는 매일 가동되어 캐논밀스(Canonmills)와 브로튼(Broughton) 지역의 하수와 우수를 수집해 대형 하수관으로 이송한다. 이후 중력에 의해 하수는 시필드(Seafield)에 위치한 스코틀랜드 최대 하수 처리시설로 흘러가 처리된다.

롭 머스타드(Rob Mustard) 스코틀랜드 수자원공사 자본투자 이사는 "맥도널드 로드 펌프장 개보수는 에든버러 하수관망에 대한 중요한 투자로, 서비스 품질 향상과 환경 및 고객 혜택 증진이라는 우리의 목표를 지원한다. 이러한 대형 장비의 철거와 설치는 까다로운 작업으로, 안전한 수행을 위해 철저한 사전 계획과 조율이 필요하다”고 말했다.

그는 이어 “맥도널드 로드 펌프장에 설치된 스크류 펌프는 스코틀랜드(Scotland) 전역 지역사회에 서비스를 제공하는 많은 핵심 지하 인프라 중 하나일 뿐이며, 대부분 시민들이 평소에 볼 수 없는 설비다. 이번 주요 공사를 안전하게 완료한 우리 팀의 노고를 치하하고 싶다"고 밝혔다.

윌리엄 무어(William Moore) 스코틀랜드 수자원공사 프로젝트 매니저는 "스코틀랜드의 물 순환 시스템을 유지하는 숨겨진 거대 설비들을 일상에서 볼 기회는 많지 않다. 이번 개보수 과정에서 이 거대한 스크류 펌프의 철거와 설치 장면을 지역사회와 공유할 수 있어 매우 뜻깊었다"고 전했다.

오수 스크류는 우천 시 작동하는 더 큰 "우수 스크류" 옆에 위치해 있다. 기존 우수 스크류는 2023년 12월에 철거되어 2024년 4월에 새 장비로 교체되었다. 이 프로젝트는 파트너사인 모리슨 워터 서비스(Morrison Water Services)와 공동으로 진행되고 있다.

Underground giant lowered deep into Edinburgh chamber

Footage shot during a major Scottish Water operation in Edinburgh has provided a rare glimpse of an underground giant vital in keeping the city's waste water network flowing.

The publicly-owned utility this week installed a nine-tonne screw pump into a deep underground chamber as part of a £5 million investment in McDonald Road Waste Water Pumping Station. 

The pumping station uses enormous Archimedean screw pumps to move millions of litres of waste water across the capital. It has been in operation for over 50 years and to ensure the continued efficiency and reliability of the city's sewer network, the site is undergoing major refurbishment.

The incredible footage shot shows a crane lowering the 14.4-metre-long screw pump, which is capable of processing 1,800 litres of water per second, into the ground outside Broughton Primary School.

The newly installed screw pump replaces the original which was removed from the ground in October 2024. It is one of two screw pumps below ground at McDonald Road.

Known as the "foul", or "duty" screw, it is in operation every day to move waste water and collect drainage from the Canonmills and Broughton areas of the city, transferring it to a large sewer. Gravity then takes over and the waste water runs along the sewer to Scotland's largest waste water treatment works at Seafield for treatment.

Rob Mustard, Scottish Water's Director of Capital Investment said: "The refurbishment of McDonald Road Pumping Station represents a significant investment in Edinburgh's waste water network, supporting our goals of service excellence and delivering improvements for the benefit of the environment and customers for years to come."

Extracting and installing assets of this size is challenging work, and requires a good deal of forward planning and co-ordination to be undertaken safely.

Rob added: "The screw pump installed at McDonald Road Pumping Station is just one of many impressive and vital underground assets serving communities across Scotland, most of which people will rarely see. This was a major operation and our dedicated teams are to be congratulated for carrying out the challenging work safely."

William Moore, Scottish Water's project manager for the operation said: "It's not every day that people get to see the hidden giants that keep Scotland's waste and water cycle running, so it's been fantastic to be able to share footage of the extraction and installation of these colossal screw pumps during the refurbishment with the community."

The foul screw is located adjacent to the larger "storm screw", which operates under storm conditions. The original storm screw was removed in December 2023 and replaced with a new one in April 2024.The project is being delivered alongside delivery partner, Morrison Water Services.
