환경 분야의 글로벌 기업인 수에즈(SUEZ)는 론-쉬드 수도 조합(Syndicat Mixte d'Eau Potable Rhône-Sud)과 함께 프랑스 케미컬 조정(Chemical Valley) 남부 레이터네이(Ternay) 레지스터장에 PFAS(per- 및 폴리플루오로알킬 물질, 과불화화합물) 처리를 새로운 솔루션을 시작하기 시작합니다.

식수 내 PFAS 처리 위한 론-쉬드 수도조합과 수에즈의 협력

프랑스인 50%이상이 장기 가뭄으로 인한 물부족보다 수질 저하를 물과 관련된 주요 우려 사항으로 꼽고 있다. 프랑스인의 72%는 수질이 악화되고 있다고 생각한다. 수질은 특히 프랑스에서 PFAS 문제에 직면한 첫 지역 중 하나인 론 밸리(Rhône Valley)에서 중요한 이슈다.

2022년부터 론-쉬드 수도조합은 테르네이 정수장에서 생산되는 식수 품질을 보존하기 위한 조치를 취했다. 수에즈는 두 단계로 구성된 계획을 실행하기 위해 해당 조합과 협력했다. 첫째, 수에즈의 국제물환경연구센터(CIRSEE)에서 연구를 수행한다.

기존 정수장에 직접 적용할 수 있는 혁신

테르네이 정수장은 2017년에 준공되었으며 현재 6개의 활성탄 필터에 의존하고 있다. 2022년부터 수행된 분석에 따르면 이 필터는 빠르게 포화 상태가 되어 유입수에 존재하는 모든 PFAS를 흡착하는 능력에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

장기적으로 식수 품질을 보장하기 위해 론-쉬드 수도조합과 수에즈는 6개의 하향류 반응기 시스템을 사용하여 활성탄을 지속적으로 갱신하는 수에즈의 특허 솔루션을 구현하기로 결정했다.

이 혁신 기술은 활성탄을 교체하기 위해 여과를 중단할 필요 없이 수처리 효과를 지속적으로 유지할 수 있게 한다. 이는 업그레이드 작업의 일환으로 기존 정수장에 적용될 수 있어 지자체의 투자 비용을 절감할 수 있다.

Treating PFAS in Chemical Valley: a first in France The Syndicat Mixte d'Eau Potable Rhône-Sud authority and SUEZ are rolling out a new treatment solution at the Ternay water plant.

In Ternay, to the south of France's Chemical Valley, the Syndicat Mixte d'Eau Potable Rhône-Sud authority and SUEZ start to build a solution for the treatment of PFAS in drinking water.

This technological solution, patented by SUEZ, is being used for the first time in France to deal with the issue of "forever chemicals". It will ensure water quality for more than 170,000 users in the Southern Lyon area supplied by the Ternay plant.

Guy Martinet, Chair of the Syndicat Mixte d'Eau Potable Rhône-Sud authority, said: "Producing high-quality water for our member authorities is a major issue at a time when raw water sources are being affected by the presence of PFAS. A collaboration between the Syndicat Mixte d'Eau Potable Rhône-Sud authority and SUEZ to treat PFAS in drinking water

For more than one in two French people, deteriorating quality is the main topic of concern in relation to water, ahead of water shortages caused by prolonged droughts. 72% of French people believe that the quality of their water is declining. Water quality is a particularly important issue in the Rhône Valley, which has been one of the first regions of France to be confronted with the issue of PFAS.

From 2022, the Syndicat Mixte d'Eau Potable Rhône-Sud authority took action to preserve the quality of drinking water produced by the Ternay plant. SUEZ worked with the authority to implement an action plan in two phases: first, laboratory tests at CIRSEE, SUEZ's international research centre, and then an industrial pilot at the plant to confirm the results obtained.

This action plan, carried out in close collaboration with the health authorities and with the support of the Agence de l'eau Rhône Méditerranée Corse, has made it possible to identify the most appropriate treatment for PFAS at the site and improve the quality of drinking water in the long term.

An innovation that can be applied directly in an existing plant

The Ternay drinking water plant was inaugurated in 2017 and currently relies on six activated carbon filters. Analysis carried out since 2022 has shown that these filters quickly become saturated, affecting their ability to retain all PFAS present in the incoming water.

To ensure the quality of drinking water over the long term, the Syndicat Mixte d'Eau Potable Rhône-Sud authority and SUEZ decided to implement SUEZ's patented solution, which involves continuous renewal of the activated carbon using a system of six downflow reactors. This innovation allows the effectiveness of water treatment to be maintained on an ongoing basis, without having to shut down filters in order to replace the carbon.

It can be integrated into an existing plant as part of upgrading work, thereby limiting the cost of investment for the local authority.
