SUEZ signs a Memorandum of Understanding with the Angolan authorities to improve water services in the province of Luanda
On the occasion of the visit to Paris of the President of Angola, João Lourenço, SUEZ signed a MoU with the Angolan authorities to strengthen collaboration in the water sector. This agreement aims to support the government¡¯s action plan to provide high-quality drinking water to the Luanda Province, which has a population of 9.7 million and is experiencing strong demographic growth.
Kelson Domingos, Administrator of EPAL-EP, said: ¡°One of our biggest challenges is undoubtedly the reduction of technical losses, the PROÁGUA project1 will improve the company's efficiency with the recovery of the productive capacity of the Stations, combined with the training of human capital and commercial efficiency, the results of this project will surely mark a new era in the management of the Public Water Company, EPAL - EP and consequently the satisfaction of the population that longs for improved services.¡±
Pierre Pauliac , Group Deputy CEO & Chief Operating Officer Water, said: "Increasing access to high-quality drinking water is essential to improve the quality of life of the people of Angola, and to foster its economic development. SUEZ is honored to support the Angolan authorities in their ambition for the Luanda Province. I would like to thank them for their trust. This project is a new illustration of SUEZ¡¯s commitment to enabling its customers to provide access to water services with resilient and innovative solutions."
Access to high-quality drinking water remains a critical issue for the Angolan population, exacerbated by the pressures of climate change. To address this fundamental challenge, the Angolan authorities have embarked on a major programme to improve water production infrastructure, notably with the construction of two water production plants, Bita and Quilonga Grande, and distribution networks.
SUEZ, a leading player in circular solutions for water and waste, signed a MoU with the Empresa Pública de Águas de Luanda (EPAL - EP), the public company responsible for the treatment and distribution of drinking water in the Province of Luanda, to improve, develop and modernise the drinking water supply in the area, through targeted investments to be defined by specific studies.
The aim of the partnership is to optimise the benefits and the sustainability of the major investments made by EPAL-EP, to continue the rehabilitation and upgrade of the existing water production and supply systems, to renew and expand the distribution network and to improve customer relations, metering, billing and collection processes.
With this MoU, SUEZ intends to support the Angolan authorities in the transformation of the water systems of the province of Luanda, the country's main economic center and one of the largest urban areas. With a population of more than 9.7 million inhabitants and an annual population growth rate of 3.4%2, the demand for drinking water, which is already under severe pressure, is increasing dramatically every year.
