미국의 인프라 컨설팅 회사인 에콤(AECOM)은 11월 25일(현지시각) 제이콥스 컨설턴시 캐나다(Jacobs Consultancy Canada, 이하 제이콥스 컨설턴시)와 협력해 아이오나 아일랜드 하수처리장(Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant) 개선을 위한 예비 엔지니어링 서비스를 제공한다고 밝혔다. 이날 에콤과 제이콥스 컨설턴시의 합작법인(Joint Venture)은 메트로 밴쿠버(Metro Vancouver)로부터 엔지니어링 서비스 제공업체로 선정됐다.

베벌리 스틴슨(Beverley Stinson) 에콤 글로벌 수자원 사업 최고경영자(CEO)는 "메트로 밴쿠버가 수처리 시설에 대한 투자를 지속하는 가운데, 우리는 업계 최고의 수처리 설계 회사로서 이를 지원할 준비가 돼 있다"며 "물공급 문제 해결은 물론 지속 가능하고 회복 탄력적인 인프라 투자에 대한 전 세계 추세에 발맞춰 첨단 수처리 기술에 대한 전문지식을 아이오나 아일랜드 폐수처리장에 적용함으로써 환경 규제에 대응하고 지역의 지속 가능성을 지원하게 돼 기쁘다"고 말했다. 

1963년에 건설된 이 하수처리장은 약 75만 명의 주민에게 서비스를 제공하고 연간 2천억L(2억㎥)의 하수를 처리하고 있다. 이번 프로젝트를 통해 메트로 밴쿠버(Metro Vancouver)는 수질을 개선하고 지역의 탄소중립 목표 달성을 지원하며, 기후 회복탄력성을 향상하는 것을 목표로 한다. 

에콤과 제이콥스 컨설턴시의 합작법인은 프로젝트 설계와 감독을 포함한 예비 엔지니어링 서비스를 제공할 계획이다. 이 프로젝트는 환경 영향을 최소화하고 운영 효율성을 제고하는 동시에 처리시설의 지속 가능성을 개선하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

리차드 버렛(Richard Barrett) 에콤 캐나다 최고경영자는 "최근 성사시킨 여러 수처리 프로젝트를 기반으로 아이오나 아일랜드 하수처리장을 향상시키기 위한 파트너로서 기여할 수 있어 자랑스럽다"며 "이 지역의 독특한 환경 문제에 대한 깊은 이해와 지역 프로젝트에 대한 경험을 통해 메트로 밴쿠버의 하수처리 능력을 향상시키고 자연 환경을 보호하는 데 중요한 역할을 선보일 것"이라고 밝혔다.

한편, 에콤은 스토니 크리크 트렁크 수어(Stoney Creek Trunk Sewer), 노스 쇼어(North Shore) 하수처리장을 비롯해 가장 복잡한 수자원 프로젝트에서 메트로 밴쿠버와 오랜 협력 관계를 맺어 왔다.

AECOM Joint Venture to Provide Engineering Services for Metro Vancouver’s Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade

 

AECOM (NYSE: ACM), the trusted global infrastructure leader, today announced that its joint venture with Jacobs Consultancy Canada has been selected by Metro Vancouver to provide preliminary engineering services for the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade. The project seeks to upgrade the existing facility to meet regulatory requirements and ensure protection of public health and the environment in a growing region.

“As Metro Vancouver continues to invest in its water treatment facilities, we’re ready to support them as the industry’s top Water design firm,” said Beverley Stinson, chief executive of AECOM’s global Water business.

“Aligned with global trends toward investment in sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including in solving global water supply challenges, our team is excited to apply our expertise in advanced water treatment technologies to the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, ensuring it meets the highest environmental standards and supports regional sustainability.”

Built in 1963, the plant serves approximately 750,000 residents and processes about 200 billion liters of wastewater annually. Through the plant upgrades, Metro Vancouver aims to ensure the project will improve water quality, support the region’s carbon neutrality objectives and enhance climate resilience.

The joint venture will provide preliminary engineering services, including design and project planning oversight. The project intends to provide significant and sustainable improvements to the treatment facilities whilst minimizing environmental impact and enhancing operational efficiency.

AECOM has long history of collaboration with Metro Vancouver on some of its most complex water projects, including the Stoney Creek Trunk Sewer Upgrade and North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant.
