콜롬비아 보호 구역에 산림인터넷 적용…아마존 열대우림 환경 모니터링으로 지속 가능한 관리 및 보호 촉진

비아(Veea)는 10월 28일(현지시각) 콜롬비아 정부와의 파트너십을 통해 원 아마존(ONE Amazon), 에콤(AECOM)과 협력해 콜롬비아 보호 구역에 적용하기 위한 산림인터넷(Internet of Forests, IoF)을 출시한다고 밝혔다. 

IoF는 하이브리드 엣지-클라우드 컴퓨팅 통신 제품(Hybrid Edge-cloud Computing and Communications Products)로 구성된 솔루션으로, 아마존 열대우림 환경을 모니터링하고 분석해 모든 지역을 디지털 방식으로 연결함으로써 농촌 지역사회에 지속 가능한 경제사회적 이익을 제공하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이번 IoF 이니셔티브는 지구를 보호하는 동시에 번영을 촉진하는 유엔(UN)의 지속가능개발목표(SDGs)를 강조한다.

미주개발은행(IDB)에 따르면, 전 세계적으로 생물 다양성과 생태계가 줄어들고 있으며, 이러한 감소로 인한 악영향이 커지고 있어 파괴된 자연을 되돌리고 6차 대멸종을 피하기 위한 긴급 조치가 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 1970년 이후 전 세계 평균 종 개체수는 69% 감소했으며, 특히 라틴 아메리카와 카리브해에서는 종 개체수가 94% 감소하는 등 기록적인 수치를 보였다. 

IoF의 첨단 기술 프레임워크는 콜롬비아 최대 규모의 국립공원이자 유네스코 세계문화유산인 치리비케테(Chiribiquete)의 생태계를 보존하는 데 도움이 될 뿐 아니라 지구에서 가장 중요한 천연자원 중 하나인 아마존 열대우림의 지속 가능한 관리 및 보호를 촉진하기 위해 설계됐다.

앨런 살마시(Allen Salmasi) 비아 공동설립자·최고경영자는 "우리 지구의 경이로움을 디지털 영역에서 볼 수 있다면 생태계 보존과 경제 성장을 위한 새로운 기회를 창출할 수 있다"며 "지속 가능한 미래를 구축하기 위해 IoF는 디지털 트윈(DT)과 같은 고급 솔루션을 통해 완전히 새로운 방식으로 자연 환경을 정량화하고 시각화할 수 있는 혁신적인 기능을 제공한다"고 말했다.

IoF 이니셔티브는 열대우림에 설치된 지상 센서 및 카메라를 통해 우수한 모니터링 기술을 거쳐 상세한 데이터를 수집할 수 있으며, 수집된 데이터는 위성 백홀(Satellite Backhaul)을 통해 열대우림 전역에 설치된 메시 클러스터(Mesh Cluster) 비아허브(VeeaHub) 장치에서 처리된다. 

머신러닝(Machine Learning) 및 인공지능(AI)을 적용한 위성 기반 LIDAR과 고해상도 이미지와 함께 다양한 소스에서 처리된 지상 데이터를 통합함으로써 △지형 역학(Landscape Dynamics) △환경 조건(Environmental Conditions) △인간 활동(Human Activities) △생물물리학적 변수 △천연자원(Natural Stocks) 등 다양한 요소 간 관계에 대한 정보를 습득할 수 있다. 

IoF와 함께 배포되는 다양한 기능은 산불 발생 여부와 같은 지상 조건과 생물 다양성 감소의 주요 원인인 삼림 벌채 등에 따른 토지 변화에 대한 정보를 실시간으로 제공하는 동시에 지역사회의 권리와 생계를 보호하고 강화할 수 있는 효과적인 모니터링, 보고 검증(Monitoring, Reporting and Verification, MRV) 메커니즘을 추가 제공한다.

NEW YORK & CALI, Colombia – In partnership with the Colombian government, Veea (NASDAQ: VEEA), a first-to-market pioneer in hyperconverged multiaccess networks with AI-driven cybersecurity, is collaborating with O.N.E.

Amazon, and AECOM to deploy a technologically advanced, multidimensional solution composed of hybrid edge-cloud computing and communications products in a protected conservation area of the Government of Colombia.

The goal of the deployment is to monitor and analyze rainforest health and digitally connect every hectare to deliver sustainable economic and social benefits to rural communities. This “Internet of Forests” initiative underscores each entity’s commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals which seek to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.

According to Inter-American Development Bank, “Biodiversity and ecosystems are declining globally and the pressures leading to such a decline are intensifying, requiring urgent action to reverse nature loss and avoid a 6th mass extinction (IPBES, 2019). There has been a global average decline of 69% in species populations since 1970 - Latin America and the Caribbean is at the very top of the list with an alarming 94% drop (WWF, 2022).”

The advanced technological framework of IoF is designed not only to help preserve the ecosystem of Chiribiquete, Colombia’s largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, but also to reveal the intrinsic value of one of the planet’s most vital natural resources, seeking sustainable management and protection of the Amazon rainforests for future generations.

The IoF initiative will enable detailed monitoring and data collection, from ground sensors and cameras installed in the rainforest, with collected data processed locally on VeeaHub devices in a mesh cluster installed in carefully selected zones throughout the rainforest with a satellite backhaul.

Data fusion through integration of the processed ground data, from different sources, together with satellite-based LIDAR and/or high-resolution Imagery with the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), provides for significant insights into and advanced knowledge of the relationship between landscape dynamics, environmental conditions, human activities, biophysical variables, and natural stocks.

The range of capabilities deployed with the IoF provides for effective monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) mechanisms that can bring real-time knowledge of ground conditions, such as start of wildfires, and land use changes, such as deforestation, which are the primary causes of biodiversity losses, while providing for safeguarding and strengthening the rights and livelihoods of local communities.
