토탈에너지스(TotalEnergies)는 8월 30일(현지시각) 글로벌 기후 솔루션 부문 선두기업인 어뉴 클라이밋(Anew Climate) 및 오로라 서스테이너블 랜드(Aurora Sustainable Lands)와 미국 10개 주에서 30만 헥타르 규모의 20개 탄소 프로젝트를 지원하기 위해 1억 달러 규모의 계약을 체결했다고 밝혔다. 

3개 기업은 이번 프로젝트를 통해 과도한 목재 벌목으로부터 산림을 보호하고 대기에서 더 많은 탄소를 저장할 수 있는 능력을 향상하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이번 투자는 아칸소, 플로리다, 켄터키, 루이지애나, 미시간, 미네소타, 뉴욕, 버지니아, 웨스트버지니아, 위스콘신 등 10개 주에서 '산림관리개선(Improved Forest Management, IFM)'을 지원한다. 

어뉴 클라이밋과 오로라 서스테이너블 랜드는 이번 탄소 프로젝트가 최고 수준에 도달할 수 있도록 운영하고 감독할 계획이다.

이러한 산림관리개선을 통해 목재 벌목을 줄여 천연 탄소 흡수원(Natural Carbon Sinks)을 보존하고 수질 및 토양 품질을 개선하며, 생물 다양성을 보호하고 자연 서식지를 보존하는 등 다양한 환경적 이점을 기대할 수 있다. 생성된 탄소배출권은 토탈 에너지스가 인수해 2030년 이후 폐기할 예정이다. 토탈에너지스는 이 배출권을 사용해 직접 스코프1, 스코프 2 배출량의 일부를 자발적으로 상쇄할 방침이다.

토탈에너지스는 지난 5월 28일 미국 정부가 발표한 자발적 탄소 시장 공동 정책 성명 및 원칙 가이드(U.S. Government Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles Guide)를 지지한다. 자연기반솔루션(Nature-based Solutions)에 대한 토탈에너지스의 조치는 이러한 원칙, 특히 무결성과 투명성, 환경 보호에 중점을 둔 원칙과 일맥상통한다.

United States: TotalEnergies Invests in Sustainable Forestry Operations to Preserve Sustainable Carbon Sinks

 

Paris, August 30, 2024 – TotalEnergies has signed a $100 million agreement with Anew Climate, a North American leader in climate solutions, and Aurora Sustainable Lands, a carbon-stewardship company and forest landowner in the U.S. to deploy their projects aimed at protecting productive forests from heavy timber harvesting, advancing conversion to sustainable management practices, and enhancing their ability to store more carbon from the atmosphere.

The investment supports Improved Forest Management (IFM) practices across a portfolio of 20 carbon projects, covering 300,000 hectares in 10 states across the U.S. (Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin). Anew Climate and Aurora Sustainable Lands will provide operational oversight to ensure the carbon projects meet the highest standards of additionality and durability.

The environmental benefits expected from this improved forest management include the preservation of natural carbon sinks by reducing timber harvesting, as well as water and soil quality improvement, biodiversity protection and natural habitat conservation.

The carbon credits generated will be acquired by TotalEnergies and retired beyond 2030. After prioritizing emission avoidance and reduction, the Company will use these credits to voluntarily offset part of its remaining direct Scope 1 & 2 emissions.
