2천만 위안(41억원) 규모 태양광 발전·풍력 에너지·그린 수소·에너지 저장·해수담수화 등 5가지 핵심 분야 연구 개발에 중점

세계 최대의 민간 담수화 회사이자 에너지 전환의 선두주자인 사우디아라비아의 ACWA 파워(ACWA Power)가 중국 상하이 푸동 신구(Shanghai Pudong New Area)에 첫 번째 해외혁신센터(Overseas Innovation Centre)를 개소한다고 3월 9일 공식 발표했다.

이 혁신센터에는△태양광(Photovoltaics) △풍력(Wind) △에너지 저장(Energy Storage) △그린 수소(Green Hydrogen) △해수 담수화(Seawater Desalination) 등 5가지 핵심 분야에서 혁신적인 솔루션을 개발하고 배포하는 데 중점을 둔다.

1단계로 2천만 위안(280만 달러, 약 41억 원)을 투자한 혁신센터는 R&D 센터와 친환경 에너지 연구소를 포함하고 있다. 이 시설은 푸동 신구 정부로부터 ‘그룹 오픈 이노베이션(Group Open Innovation, GOI)’을 수상했다.

ACWA 파워는 이날 혁신센터 개소식에서 걸프 재생에너지연구소(Gulf Renewables Laboratory, GRL)와 상하이 자오통대학(Shanghai Jiao Tong University, SJTU)이라는 두 주요 파트너와 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다. 이번 계약을 통해 혁신센터는 획기적인 프로젝트를 육성하고, 업계의 과제를 해결할 수 있는 인재와 기술 전문지식을 갖추게 된다.

ACWA 파워의 중살레 카브티(Saleh Khabti) 중국 사장은 “상하이에 혁신센터를 설립한 것은 글로벌 협력과 기술 발전에 대한 우리의 헌신을 보여주는 증거”라면서 “주요 기관과의 파트너십을 통해 중국뿐만 아니라 글로벌 네트워크 전반에 걸쳐 지속가능한 에너지 및 물 솔루션의 개발과 배포를 가속화하는 것을 목표로 한다”고 강조했다.

혁신센터는 정부기관, 국영기업, 스타트업(Startups), OEM((Original Equipment Manufacturer, 주문자 상표 부착 생산자), 대학, 연구기관 및 인증기관을 통합하여 역동적인 생태계를 조성하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이러한 협력적 접근 방식은 연구에서 실제 응용에 이르기까지 프로젝트 수명 주기 전반에 걸쳐 혁신을 주도한다.

이 센터는 푸둥 신구 지역에 활기찬 혁신 생태계를 구축하는 중국 파트너와의 협력 플랫폼 역할을 한다. 또한 이 이니셔티브는 ‘사우디 비전 2030(Saudi Vision 2030)’을 지원하고 ACWA 파워의 ‘전략 2.0(Strategy 2.0)’과 중국 전략을 촉진하여 글로벌 지속 가능성과 기술 리더십에 대한 회사의 헌신을 강조한다.

이 혁신센터는 사우디아라비아와 중국의 환경 목표에 크게 기여하여 친환경 경제로의 전환을 지원하고 성장을 위한 협력 환경을 조성할 것으로 기대된다.

ACWA 파워는 올해 초, 여러 지방에 걸쳐 1GW(기가와트)가 넘는 프로젝트에 대한 투자 계약을 통해 중국의 재생 에너지 시장에 공식적으로 진출한다고 발표했다. ACWA 파워는 오는 2030년까지 중국에 최대 300억 달러(약 43조 7천700억 원를 투자할 계획이며, 이는 전 세계적으로 관리 중인 전체 자산을 약 2천500억 달러(364조 7천500억 원)로 세 배로 늘리려는 계획에 따른 것이다.

ACWA Power Launches its First Overseas Innovation Centre in China

The RMB 20 million facility will focus on research and development in solar photovoltaics, wind energy, green hydrogen, energy storage and seawater desalination

Key partnerships signed with Gulf Renewables Laboratory and Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Shanghai, China : ACWA Power, the world's largest private water desalination company, leader in energy transition, and first mover into green hydrogen, today announced the official opening of its first overseas Innovation Centre in Pudong New Area, Shanghai. 

The state-of-the-art facility will focus on developing and deploying innovative solutions in five key areas: photovoltaics, wind, energy storage, green hydrogen, and seawater desalination.

With an investment of RMB 20 million (USD 2.8 million) in the first phase, the Innovation Centre includes an R&D Centre and a Green Energy Laboratory. The facility has been awarded ‘Group Open Innovation (GOI)’ by the Pudong New Area Government.

During the opening ceremony, ACWA Power signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with two key partners, Gulf Renewables Laboratory (GRL) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). The agreements will equip the Innovation Centre with the talent and technical expertise to nurture groundbreaking projects and tackle industry challenges.

"The launch of our Innovation Centre in Shanghai is a testament to our commitment to global collaboration and technological advancement," said Saleh Khabti, President of China, ACWA Power.

 "Through partnerships with leading organisations, we aim to accelerate the development and deployment of sustainable energy and water solutions, not just in China, but across our global network."

The Centre aims to foster a dynamic ecosystem, bringing together government entities, state-owned enterprises, startups, OEMs, universities, research institutions, and certification authorities. This collaborative approach will drive innovation throughout the entire project lifecycle, from research to real world application.

The Centre will serve as a platform for collaboration with Chinese partners, building a vibrant innovation ecosystem in the Pudong New Area. The initiative also supports Saudi Vision 2030 and facilitates ACWA Power's Strategy 2.0 and China strategy, emphasising the company's dedication to global sustainability and technological leadership.

The Innovation Centre is expected to contribute significantly to both Saudi Arabia and China's environmental goals, supporting the transition to a greener economy and fostering a collaborative environment for growth.

Earlier this year, ACWA Power announced its formal entry into China's renewable energy market with investment agreements for over 1GW of projects across multiple provinces. By 2030, ACWA Power aims to invest up to USD 30 billion in China, in line with its plans to triple overall assets under management to about USD 250 billion globally.
