미 내무부(Department of the Interior)는 네바다와 캘리포니아의 경계에 위치한 타호 호(Lake Tahoe) 유역에서 친수활동 기회 개선, 야생 동물 서식지 보존, 유해 연료 감소, 산불 예방을 목표로 하는 36개 프로젝트에 3억7천500만 달러 이상을 투자한다고 발표했다. 「남부 네바다 공공 토지 관리법」에 따라 토지 매각을 통해 조달된 이 자금은 지속 가능한 지역 사회 인프라와 환경 보존에 대한 지속적인 투자를 의미한다.

로라 다니엘 데이비스(Laura Daniel-Davis) 차관보 대행은 "1998년 이래 라스베이거스 밸리의 공공 토지 매각은 지역 사회에 이로운 프로젝트를 촉진하고 주민과 방문객의 삶의 질을 향상시켜 왔다"면서 "이 프로그램은 일자리와 지역 경제를 지원하고, 농촌 및 서비스가 부족한 지역의 친수활동을 개선하며, '아메리카 더 뷰티풀(America the Beautiful)' 이니셔티브에 따라 2030년까지 미국 토지와 유역의 최소 30%를 보존하겠다는 내무부의 공약과 일치한다"고 말했다.

이 기금은 연방국토개발국(Bureau of Reclamation), 미국 국립공원관리청(National Park Service), 미국 어류 및 야생동물관리국(U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), 미국 산림청(U.S. Forest Service), 처칠 카운티(Churchill County), 클라크 카운티(Clark County), 링컨 카운티(Lincoln County), 헨더슨(Henderson), 라스베가스(Las Vegas), 노스라스베이거스(North Las Vegas), 서던네바다 수도청(Southern Nevada Water Authority), 네바다 대학교(University of Nevada), 리노(Reno)를 포함한 여러 연방, 지방 및 교육 기관에 도움이 될 것이다.

토지관리국(Bureau of Land Management)에서 「남부 네바다 공공 토지 관리법」을 시행한 이래 라스베이거스 밸리 토지 매각에서 45억 달러 이상을 창출하여 네바다, 타호 호 유역, 미드호 국립휴양지(Lake Mead National Recreation Area)의 공공 토지를 개선하는 프로젝트에 기금을 20차례 지원했다. 이 프로그램은 공원, 산책로, 보호 구역 개발, 자본 개선, 다종 서식지 보호 계획(multi-species habitat conservation plans), 환경적으로 민감한 토지 인수, 스프링 마운틴, 카슨 산맥, 타호 호의 유해 연료 감소 노력을 지원했다.

Interior Department Announces $375 Million for Recreation and Restoration Projects in Nevada and California

 

The Department of the Interior today announced it will commit over $375 million to fund 36 projects aimed at enhancing recreational opportunities, conserving wildlife habitat, reducing hazardous fuels, and preventing wildfires across Nevada and the California side of the Lake Tahoe Basin. The funding, sourced from land sales under the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA), marks a continued investment in sustainable community infrastructure and environmental preservation. 

"Since 1998, public land sales in the Las Vegas Valley have fueled projects that benefit communities and elevate quality of life for residents and visitors," said Acting Deputy Secretary Laura Daniel-Davis. "This program supports jobs and local economies, improves recreation in rural and underserved areas, and aligns with our commitment to conserve at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030 under the America the Beautiful initiative." 

Funding will benefit multiple federal, local, and educational entities, including the Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, counties of Churchill, Clark, and Lincoln, as well as the cities of Henderson, Las Vegas, and North Las Vegas, the Southern Nevada Water Authority, and the University of Nevada, Reno. 

Since its inception, SNPLMA – implemented by the Bureau of Land Management – has generated over $4.5 billion from Las Vegas Valley land sales, fueling 20 rounds of funding for projects that enhance public lands in Nevada, the Lake Tahoe Basin, and areas within Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Arizona.

The program has supported development of parks, trails, and conservation areas; capital improvements; multi-species habitat conservation plans; acquisition of environmentally sensitive lands; and hazardous fuels reduction efforts in the Spring Mountains, Carson Range, and Lake Tahoe. Additionally, 5% of SNPLMA revenue supports Nevada’s General Education Fund, while 10% is allocated to the Southern Nevada Water Authority.
