Second desalination extension project in Barka awarded to ACWA Power
The Oman Power & Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has awarded phase two of the Barka desalination project to ACWA Power Barka.
The second reverse osmosis (RO) plant will have a capacity of 57,000 m3/day. This follows the first phase of the expansion project which added 45,000 m3/day of desalinated water the country¡¯s supply (see WWi story).
In a filing to the Muscat Securities Market, ACWA Power Barka reportedly said: ¡°We are pleased to inform our stakeholders that ACWA Power Barka has been granted a letter of award by OPWP for execution of a 12.5 MIGD (57,000 m3/day) seawater RO plant (water expansion project phase two).¡±
The second of the expansion projects will be needed to help meet an expected increase in water demand.
In its seven-year statement, OPWP said ¡°water peak demand is expected to increase at an average rate of around 6% per year over a seven-year horizon¡±.
This compares to previous 7-Year Statement forecasts showing annual growth was in the range of 3% to 5%.
