| [스코틀랜드] 밝은 전망이 예상되는 스코틀랜드의 태양에너지
전문가들의 의견에 따르면 최신 기술이 적용된 태양전지판(Solar Panel)을 25만 개의 지붕 위에 설치한다면 스코틀랜드에서 필요로 하는 전기 수요의 약 1/6을 충족시킬 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 과학자들은 스코틀랜드 세 가구 중 하나가 겪고 있는 적절한 난방 및 온수에 대한 어려움을 극복하기 위해 적절한 전략이라고 말한다.
이와 관련하여 스코틀랜드의 과학자, 비즈니스 리더 및 공공분야 전문가들은 어떻게 하면 스코틀랜드가 태양발전을 활용하여 많은 혜택을 받을 수 있는지에 대한 보고서를 작성하는데 참여하였다. 이번 보고서에 참여한 전문가들은 남쪽을 바라보고 있는 건물의 지붕 위에 태양광발전 설비를 설치하여 태양으로부터 에너지를 수확한다면 경제적, 환경적 및 사회적으로 큰 영향력을 확보할 수 있을 것이라 말했다.
스코틀랜드 에든버러 대학(University of Edinburgh) 연구진은 프로젝트에 참여하여 스코틀랜드가 보유하고 있는 태양에너지 잠재력에 대한 가장 포괄적인 평가를 실시하였으며, 이를 보고서에 담았다. 연구진은 프로젝트를 통해 태양발전이 스코틀랜드 재생가능 에너지(Renewable Energy) 목표를 총족하고, 일자리를 창출하며 도시 및 농촌 지역에 거주하는 사람들의 에너지 수요를 확보하는 일에 기여할 수 있다는 사실을 확인하였다. 전문가들은 지난 5월 중순 스코틀랜드 의회를 통해 태양에너지 기술과 이들이 주는 혜택에 대한 인식을 높이고자 이벤트를 개최하였다. 이 자리에는 정부, 산업 및 학교 관계자들이 모여 태양에너지 전략을 논의하였다.
지난 2001년 이후 태양전지판을 사용하여 전기를 생산하는 비용은 70% 이상으로 하락하였다. 전문가들은 2025년까지 재생가능 에너지를 이용하는 가장 경제적인 방법이 될 것이며, 심지어 화석연료 보다 적은 비용으로 전기를 공급할 수 있다고 말한다. 또한 태양발전 기술 개발은 보다 효율적이면서 다용도 활용을 가능하게 할 것이다.
연구진은 스코틀랜드에 거주하는 많은 사람들이 전기를 효과적으로 생산될 수 있는 태양발전에 대해 많은 인식을 하지 못한다고 말한다. 이들은 스코틀랜드와 유사한 기후를 갖고 있는 독일은 다른 어느 국가보다도 태양전지판을 통해 많은 에너지를 공급한다는 점을 지적하였다. 에든버러 대학의 Neil Robertson 박사는 “최근 태양발전과 관련한 비용 하락은 우리가 인지하는 것과 관계없이 대규모 태양발전 시대가 오고 있음을 의미한다. 따라서 지금 가장 중요한 일은 이를 올바로 인식하고, 이를 통해 사회적, 환경적, 사업적으로 얻을 수 있는 혜택을 극대화하도록 계획하는 일”이라고 말했다.
이번 연구는 SISER(Scottish Institute for Solar Energy Research), 태양에너지그룹(Scottish Solar Energy Group), 에너지기술파트너십(Energy Technology Partnership), AES 솔라사 및 SUII(Scottish Universities Insight Institute)로부터 지원을 받았다.

Solar energy prospects are bright for Scotland, experts say
Installing state-of-the-art solar panels on a quarter of a million roofs could meet one-sixth of Scotland's electricity demands, experts say. Scientists say the strategy could ease the plight of one in three Scottish households, which currently struggle to provide themselves with adequate heat and hot water.
Researchers, business leaders and public sector experts have contributed to a report which sets out how Scotland could benefit from solar power. They say harnessing energy from the sun on the roofs of south-facing buildings could have significant economic, environmental and social impacts. The project -- involving researchers at the University of Edinburgh -- provides the most comprehensive assessment yet of Scotland's solar energy potential. Findings from the project reveal that solar power could help Scotland meet renewable energy targets, create jobs and ensure the energy needs of people in cities and rural areas are met.
Experts are holding an event at the Scottish Parliament today (Monday 19 May) to raise awareness of solar technology and its benefits. Organisers will call for government, industry and academia to work together on solar energy strategies. Since 2001, the cost of generating electricity using solar panels has fallen by more than 70 per cent. Experts say that by 2025 it could become the cheapest way of harnessing renewable energy and provide electricity that is cheaper than fossil fuels. Developments in solar technologies are also making them more efficient and versatile.
Scientists say many people are not yet aware that solar power can be generated effectively in Scotland. They point out that Germany -- with a climate similar to Scotland -- produces more energy using solar panels than any other country. The study was supported by the Scottish Institute for Solar Energy Research, the Scottish Solar Energy Group, the Energy Technology Partnership, AES Solar and the Scottish Universities Insight Institute.
Dr Neil Robertson, of the University of Edinburgh's School of Chemistry, said: "The plummeting cost means that large-scale solar power is coming to Scotland whether we realise it or not. The key priority is to recognise this, so that we can start planning to maximise the social, environmental and business benefits it will bring us."
