[UAE] DEWA, 담수화시설 펌프·밸브 베어링을 토르돈 제품으로 교체

DEWA(두바이 전기수자원부, Dubai Electricity & Water Authority)는 두바이 전역의 시설에서 기존 베어링을 토르돈(Thordon) 제품으로 체계적으로 교체하고 있다. 첫 번째 베어링 개조는 25년 전에 이루어졌다.

DEWA는 UAE(아랍에미리트) 전역의 담수화 플랜트에 캐나다 업체의 선구적인 기술을 설치한 이후 산업용 펌프 베어링을 그리스(grease)가 없는 토르돈 워터 윤활 베어링 솔루션(Thordon water lubricated bearing solution)으로 교체하는 데 한 걸음 더 다가섰다.

올해 6월까지 토르돈 베어링(Thordon Bearing)의 두바이 기반 유통업체인 OPI(Ocean Power International)는 버터플라이 밸브(butterfly valve) 20개와 브라인 재순환 펌프(brine recirculation and vertical pump) 7개에 설치할 토르플라스-블루(ThorPlas-Blue)와 SXL 베어링을 공급했다.

DEWA는 꽤 오랫동안 두바이 전역의 시설에서 토르돈(Thordon) 제품으로 기존 베어링을 체계적으로 대체해 왔다. 첫 번째 베어링 개조는 25년도 더 전에 수행되었다.

OPI의 라피드 쿠레시(Rafid Qureshi) 상무는 "우리는 DEWA가 원래의 방향과 관련하여 겪고 있는 문제에 대해 들은 후 토르플라스-블루(ThorPlas-Blue)를 포함한 솔루션을 제안했다. 하중 계산을 확인하고 작동 압력이 베어링 재료의 45MPa(6527psi) 공차를 초과하지 않는지 확인한 후 토르돈 부싱(Thordon bushing)을 가공하여 장착했다"라고 말했다.

라피드 쿠레시(Rafid Qureshi) 상무는 "첫 설치 이후 두바이 전역의 여러 발전 및 담수화 플랜트의 펌프와 밸브 베어링을 교체했다"라고 밝혔다.

예를 들어 OPI와 토르돈은 2019년 OPI 워크샵에서 섬유 라이닝 금속 베어링이 마모된 후 탈광물화 피트 펌프(pit pump)를 위한 베어링 개조를 완료했다. 그리고 2020년 5월에는 OPI 워크샵에서 20개의 수직 펌프와 6개의 브라인 재순환 펌프 차단 밸브를 토르돈 폴리머 재료로 개조했다.

라피드 쿠레시(Rafid Qureshi) 상무는 "원래 수직 펌프에 설치된 청동 부싱이 마모되어 6∼8개월마다 고장이 자주 발생했다"라면서 "불행하게도 부싱 오류로 인해 여러 구성 요소가 고장이 나서 DEWA는 더 오래 지속되고 더 안정적인 솔루션을 찾아야 했다"라고 말했다.

라피드 쿠레시(Rafid Qureshi) 상무는 이어 "펌프의 매체가 해수이기 때문에 새 베어링은 내식성이 있어야 했고 최대 80℃(176℉)의 높은 작동 속도와 온도를 견딜 수 있어야 했다. ThorPlas-Blue는 이러한 종류의 애플리케이션에 이상적인 베어링 등급으로 간주되었다"라고 덧붙였다.

"DEWA가  토르플라스-블루(ThorPlas-Blue) 베어링으로 수직 펌프를 작동하기 시작한 이후 다운타임이 발생하지 않거나 진동이 증가하지 않았다"고 라피드 쿠레시(Rafid Qureshi)는 말했다.

그는 특히 "DEWA는 ThorPlas-Blue를 설치함으로써 다운타임을 약 5만 달러 절감하고 계획되지 않은 유지 보수와 그리스 및 예비 부품 조달 관련 비용을 없앴다. Thordon 설치 이후 모든 설비에서 비슷한 운영비용 절감 효과를 경험했다"라고 강조했다.

토르론 베어링(Thordon Bearing)의 전략 계정 매니저 - 버티갈 펌프스(Vertical Pumps), 키스 브랜드(Keith Brand)는 "OPI 팀은 이 최종 사용자를 수십만 달러를 절약하는 놀라운 일을 해냈다"라고 동의했다.

 토르플라스-블루(ThorPlas-Blue) 베어링은 모든 유형의 산업용 펌프에 사용할 수 있으며 청동 및 기타 비금속 베어링을 교체하는 데 이상적이다. 다양한 크기로 제공되며 필요한 치수에 맞춰 쉽게 가공할 수 있다.

그리스 브론즈 베어링(greased bronze bearing) 대신 유지보수가 필요 없는 것으로 개발된 ThorPlas-Blue는 최대 45MPa(6527psi)의 동적 작동 압력이 가능한 전용 엔지니어링 열가소성 플라스틱 베어링이며, 그리스 브론즈가 현재 설치되어 있는 거의 모든 애플리케이션에 쉽게 다시 장착할 수 있다. 토르돈 엔지니어링 검토 후 더 높은 압력이 발생할 수 있다.

키스 브랜드(Keith Brand)는 "기름을 제거함으로써 확실한 비용상의 이점을 얻을 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 베어링 재료는 기존의 다른 펌프 베어링에 비해 훨씬 안전하고 깨끗해졌다"라고 덧붙였다.

가장 최근의 프로젝트에는  토르플라스-블루(ThorPlas-Blue) 베어링을 두바이 담수화 플랜트 D, G, L 및 M의 이동식, 해수 및 소방 펌프 역류 방지 밸브로 개조하는 작업이 포함된다.

OPI는 2022년 말까지 모든 DEWA 펌프 베어링의 60% 이상을 ThorPlas-Blue 또는 SXL로 전환하기를 희망하고 있다.

OPI의 라피드 쿠레시(Rafid Qureshi) 상무는 "토르돈의 베어링 재료는 보다 지속 가능하고 안정적이며 경제적인 기술을 채택하려는 DEWA의 약속과 잘 들어맞다. DEWA가 경쟁 우위를 유지하는 동시에 ESG(Environment Social Governance ; 환경·사회·지배구조) 목표에 기여할 수 있다"라고 말했다.

DEWA to replace pump and valve bearings with Thordon’s grease-free material
 

DEWA has been systematically replacing its traditional bearings with Thordon products at facilities across Dubai. The first bearing retrofit was carried out more than 25 years ago.

Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) is a step closer to replacing its industrial pump bearings with grease-free Thordon water lubricated bearing solutions, following the installation of the Canadian company’s pioneering technology to desalination plants across the United Arab Emirates.

In the first six months of this year, Ocean Power International (OPI), Thordon Bearings’ Dubai-based distributor, supplied ThorPlas-Blue and SXL bearings for installation to 20 butterfly valves and 7 brine recirculation and vertical pumps, respectively.

For quite some time now, DEWA has been systematically replacing its traditional bearings with Thordon products at facilities across Dubai. The first bearing retrofit was carried out more than 25 years ago.

OPI Managing Director, Rafid Qureshi said: “After hearing about the issues that DEWA was having with the original bearings, we proposed a solution that included ThorPlas-Blue. After checking load calculations and ensuring operating pressures did not exceed the bearing material’s 45 MPa (6,527 psi) tolerance, we machined and fitted the Thordon bushings.

“Since that first installation, we have replaced pump and valve bearings at several power generation and desalination plants across Dubai.”

In 2019 for example, OPI and Thordon completed bearing retrofits at the OPI workshop for a de-mineralization pit pump after fabric lined metal bearings had worn out. And in May last year, 20 vertical pumps and 6 brine recirculation pump isolation valves at the OPI workshop were retrofitted with the Thordon polymer material.

“The bronze bushings originally installed in the vertical pumps were wearing out and causing frequent breakdowns every 6-8 months,” said Qureshi. “Unfortunately, there were multiple components that failed as a result of the bushing failure, forcing DEWA to find a longer lasting, more reliable solution.

“As the medium in these pumps is seawater, the new bearings had to be corrosion resistant, and capable of withstanding high operating speeds and temperatures up to 80°C (176°F). ThorPlas-Blue was deemed the ideal bearing grade for this kind of application.”

Since DEWA began operating their vertical pumps with the ThorPlas-Blue bearings, there has been zero downtime or increased vibration, Qureshi said.

“By installing ThorPlas-Blue, DEWA has saved about US$50,000 in downtime, eliminating unplanned maintenance and the costs associated with grease and spare parts procurement. Similar reductions in operational expenditures have been experienced across all of the company’s facilities following the Thordon installations,” he said.

Thordon Bearings’ Strategic Account Manager - Vertical Pumps, Keith Brand agreed: “The team at OPI have done a phenomenal job in saving this end user hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

The ThorPlas-Blue bearing can be used in all types of industrial pump applications and is an ideal replacement for bronze and other non-metallic bearings. It is available in a wide range of sizes and is easily machined to the dimensions required.

Developed as a maintenance-free alternative to greased bronze bearings, ThorPlas-Blue is a proprietary engineered thermoplastic bearing capable of dynamic operating pressures up to 45 MPa (6527 psi) and can easily be back fit into virtually all applications where greased bronze is currently installed. Higher pressures may be possible following a Thordon engineering review.

“The elimination of grease not only offers obvious cost benefits, but the bearing material is much safer and cleaner to operate than other conventional pump bearings,” added Brand.

The most recent projects involve the retrofitting of ThorPlas-Blue bearings to potable, seawater and fire-fighting pump non-return valves at Dubai desalination plants D, G, L and M.

OPI hopes to have converted more than 60% of all DEWA pump bearings to ThorPlas-Blue or SXL by the end of 2022.

“Thordon’s bearing material certainly fits well with DEWA’s commitment to adopting more sustainable, reliable and economically efficient technologies. It can help DEWA maintain a competitive edge while contributing to its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives,” said Qureshi.

DEWA currently has an installed capacity of 12,300 megawatts (MW) of electricity and 1.78 million Kiloliters (470 million gallons) of desalinated water per day, providing its services to over one million customers in Dubai.
