아쿠아 아메리카(Aqua America)는 미국의 수자원 기반시설에 대한 투자의 중요성에 대한 인식을 높이기 위해 5월 15∼19일 물 인프라 주간(Infrastructure Week)을 맞아 올해에 총 4억5천만 달러를 투자하여 아쿠아가 운영관리하는 미국 8개 주의 주민들이 깨끗하고 안전한 물을 공급할 수 있도록 수도 인프라를 재정비 및 신설할 계획이다.

Aqua는 2012년과 2016년 사이에 700마일 이상의 수도관 교체를 포함하여 인프라 개선에 15억 달러를 투자했다. 미국수자원협회 (American Water Works Association)에 따르면, 향후 25년간 식수 공급을 유지 및 확대하기 위해 전국적으로 1조 달러가 필요하다.

아쿠아 아메리카의 엔지니어링 및 환경담당 선임 부사장인 빌 로스(Bill Ross)는 "선도적 인 물 유틸리티로서 우리 아쿠아의 최우선 과제는 안전하고 믿을 수 있는 식수를 고객에게 제공하는 것"이라고  말했다.

그는 또 "인프라 주간은 아쿠아가 노후화 된 인프라를 대체하기 위한 노력에 대한 인식을 높이고 우리에게 양질의 물과 안정적인 서비스를 제공 할 수 있는 좋은 기회를 제공하겠다"고 밝혔다.

2017년 미국토목학회 사회기반시설(American Society for Civil Engineers Infrastructure)  보고서에는 미국의 음용수 및 하·폐수 기반시설을 "D"와 "D+"로 평가했으며, 다음과 같은 문제점을 보여준다.

수돗물은 전국 100만 마일의 파이프를 통해 전달되지만, 그 수도파이프 중 많은 수가 매설된지 100년에 가까운 것도 있는 것으로 나타났다.

미국에서는 1년에 약 24만건의 수도관이 파손되어 2조 갤런 이상의 식수를 낭비하고 있다. 노화된 파이프로 인해 누수량은 매일 공급되는 수돗물 중 14∼18%나 되는데 이는 1,500 만 가구에 수돗물을 공급할 수 있는 양이다.

Aqua의 2017년 인프라 투자 계획에는 8개 주에서 150마일의 수도 본관을 교체하여 수십억 갤런의 파이프 및 수도관에서 누출되는 물을 절약 할 계획이다.

Aqua America to invest $450M on water infrastructure upgrades in 2017

BRYN MAWR, PA, MAY 16, 2016 -- Aqua America (Aqua) is recognizing Infrastructure Week, May 15-19, 2017, to help raise awareness about the significant need for investment in the United States' water infrastructure. With plans to invest $450 million in 2017, Aqua will help rebuild and replace water infrastructure in the communities it serves. Projects are planned across all eight of Aqua's states to ensure clean and safe water reaches each customer.

Between 2012 and 2016, Aqua invested $1.5 billion in infrastructure renewal, including replacement of more than 700 miles of water mains. According to the American Water Works Association, an estimated $1 trillion is needed nationwide to maintain and expand drinking water service over the next 25 years.

"As a leading water utility, our number one priority is delivering safe, reliable drinking water to our customers," said Bill Ross, senior vice president, engineering and environmental affairs. "Infrastructure Week provides a great opportunity to increase awareness about the efforts Aqua makes to replace aging infrastructure, enabling us to provide quality water and reliable service."

The 2017 American Society for Civil Engineers Infrastructure Report Card ranked the United States' drinking water and wastewater infrastructure "D" and "D+" and illustrates the following challenges:

Drinking water is delivered via one million miles of pipes across the country, but many of those pipes are approaching 100 years in age

There are an estimated 240,000 water main breaks per year in the United States, wasting more than two trillion gallons of treated drinking water

It is estimated that leaky, aging pipes waste 14 to 18 percent of each day's treated water, which could support 15 million households

Aqua's 2017 infrastructure investment plan includes replacing 150 miles of water mains across eight states, helping to save billions of gallons of water leaking from pipes and water mains.

"Aqua employees understand the challenges facing the nation over the next few decades, and we work every day to do our part to help revitalize the nation's infrastructure," said Ross. "Aqua is constantly repairing and replacing old, outdated facilities, water mains, water and wastewater plants, and well stations. Our intent is to continue this commitment well into the future."
