[스위스] 세계경제포럼, 담수문제 해결 위해 1,500만 달러 자금 확보

인도·프랑스·미국 기록적인 가뭄과 함께 전 세계 담수 생태계 기후변화 위협 받아

2030년까지 전 세계 물 수요가 지속 가능한 공급을 40% 이상 초과

물 안보가 이렇게 시급한 적은 없었다. 오는 2030년까지 전 세계 인구가 85억 명에 이를 것으로 예상되는 가운데, 세계의 제한된 담수 공급에 대한 압력이 증가하고 있다. 2030년까지 전 세계 물 수요는 지속 가능한 공급을 40% 초과하게 될 것으로 예상된다.

사람들의 건강과 식량 생산에 즉각적이고 심각한 결과를 초래할 뿐만 아니라, 깨끗한 물에 대한 접근의 부족은 경제 성장을 최대 3분의 1까지 제한할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 자연 생물 다양성과 사회적 구조에도 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다.

정부와 기업은 담수를 전략의 전면에 내세워야 하며, 혁신은 성공의 핵심 역할을 할 것이다.

담수 보존 및 관리 의제를 주도하기 위해 선도적인 글로벌 대기업 HCL은 유망한 스타트업을 파트너와 연결하고 확장에 필요한 자금을 지원하는 세계경제포럼(World Economic Forum ; WEF)의 개방형 혁신 플랫폼인 ‘업링크(UpLink)’와 파트너십을 맺었다.

HCL은 5년간 1천500만 달러 규모의 투자를 통해 물 혁신 의제를 가속화하고 업링크에서 글로벌 담수분야 혁신 생태계를 조성한다. 이 계획은 물 절약에 있어 혁신적인 프로젝트를 추진한 HCL의 지역 경험을 활용하고 글로벌 리더와 챔피언을 한 데 모아 다자간 협력을 촉진한다.

HCL 그룹의 CEO이자 HCL 테크놀러지스의 회장인 로시니 나다르 말호트라(Roshni Nadar Malhotra)는 “오늘날 전 세계적으로 담수자원은 매우 부담이 되고 있으며 지구상의 다섯 번째 어린이들 중 한 명꼴로 물 부족에 직면하고 있다”고 말했다. 

말호트라 회장은 이어 “HCL에서 우리는 이 세계적인 위기를 해결하기 위해 모든 노력을 기울이기를 원한다. 세계경제포럼의 업링크(Uplink) 플랫폼과의 파트너십은 이러한 방향으로의 한 단계이며, 우리의 생태계 접근 방식은 진정으로 혁신적일 수 있다”라면서 “우리는 함께 이 중요한 분야의 혁신을 장려하고 확장시킬 뿐만 아니라 물 중심의 기업가, 이른바 ‘아쿠아프레너(Aquapreneur)’들이 혁신적 솔루션을 실행할 수 있는 역량을 구축하는 데 도움을 줄 것이다”라고 강조했다.

업링크(Uplink)와의 새로운 협업은 다음과 같은 담수 혁신 생태계(freshwater innovation ecosystem) 구축을 포함한다. 여기에는 아쿠아리움 사업자의 솔루션 출처를 위한 혁신 과제 실행, 이러한 ‘아쿠아프레너(Aquapreneur)’ 사업자를 기존 이니셔티브 및 물 네트워크와 연결, 벤처 사업을 확장할 수 있는 자금 지원 기회 잠금 해제, 그리고 글로벌 의제에 대한 인식 제고 등이 포함된다. 

HCL과 업링크(Uplink)는 함께 기술 및 리더십 역량을 개발하는 것을 목표로 합니다. 이러한 결합된 노력은 물과 부문의 주류 아이디어, 접근 방식 및 솔루션에 대한 혁신 의제를 추진하고 가속화할 것이다.

세계경제포럼의 올리비에 슈워브(Olivier Schwab) 전무이사는 “‘아쿠아프레너(Aquapreneur)’혁신적인 아이디어는 중요한 시기에 나온다”면서 “물 부족이 전 세계 지역을 뒤덮고 있는 가운데, 우리는 담수 분야에서의 진전을 빠르게 추적하고 사람들과 지구를 위한 보안을 구축해야 한다”고 강조했다. 

올리비에 슈워브 전무는 이어 “HCL과 UpLink의 협력은 세계 최고의 혁신자들의 솔루션을 활용하고 발전시켜, 그들이 세계에서 가장 취약한 물 시스템을 위해 규모를 확장하고 변화를 주도할 수 있도록 하는 이니셔티브와 네트워크에 그들을 연결할 것이다”라고 덧붙였다.

담수 관리의 혁신은 또한 녹색경제로의 전환에 있어서 물의 역할에 있어서도 매우 중요하다. 오늘 다보스(Davos)의 새로운 보고서인 ‘담수 미래(Freshwater Future)’에서 강조했듯이 푸른색이 없으면 녹색 경제도 없다.

업링크(Uplink)는 2020년 세계경제포럼 연차총회에서 창립 파트너인 세일즈포스(Salesforce), 딜로이트(Deloitte)와 함께 출범했다. 이 플랫폼은 혁신의 도전(Innovation Challenges)으로 알려진 경쟁 프레임워크를 통해 새로운 혁신(innovation)을 공급한다. 업링크(Uplink)는 30개 이상의 과제를 수행했으며 세계에서 가장 시급한 문제에 대한 혁신적인 솔루션을 보유한 260개 이상의 기업가를 식별했다.

Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, 24 May 2022 - Water security has never been more urgent. With the global population set to hit 8.5 billion by 2030, pressure is increasing on the world’s limited supply of freshwater. By 2030, the global demand for water will have exceeded sustainable supply by 40%. 

In addition to immediate and dire consequences to people’s health and food production, a lack of access to clean water can limit economic growth by up to one-third, as well as have adverse effects on natural biodiversity and social fabrics.

Government and business must bring freshwater to the forefront of their strategies and innovation will play a key role in their success.

To drive the freshwater conservation and management agenda, leading global conglomerate HCL has partnered with UpLink, the open innovation platform of the World Economic Forum that connects highly promising start-ups with the partners and funding they need to scale. 

Through a $15 million investment over five years, HCL will accelerate the innovation agenda for water and create a first-of-its-kind innovation ecosystem for the global freshwater sector on UpLink.

The initiative draws on HCL’s regional experience of driving innovative projects in water conservation and brings global leaders and champions together to foster multistakeholder collaboration.

“Today, freshwater resources globally are extremely burdened and every fifth child on this planet faces water scarcity,” said Roshni Nadar Malhotra, CEO of HCL Group and Chairperson of HCL Technologies. “At HCL we want to make every effort to help resolve this global crisis. Our partnership with the World Economic Forum’s UpLink platform is a step in this direction and our ecosystem approach can be truly transformative. Together we will not just encourage and scale innovations in this critical area but also help build capacity for water-focused entrepreneurs ? so-called ‘aquapreneurs’ - to execute on the innovative solutions.”

The new collaboration with UpLink encompasses building a freshwater innovation ecosystem that includes: running innovation challenges to source solutions from aquapreneurs; connecting these aquapreneurs to existing initiatives and water networks; unlocking funding opportunities to scale their ventures; and raising awareness on the global agenda of the importance of freshwater.

Together, HCL and UpLink aim to help aquapreneurs build their skills and leadership capacity. These combined efforts will drive and accelerate the innovation agenda for water and the sector’s mainstream ideas, approaches and solutions.

Innovation in freshwater management is also critical for water’s role in the transition to a green economy, as highlighted in the release of a new report in Davos today, A Freshwater Future: Without Blue, There Is No Green Economy.

UpLink was launched at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2020 in collaboration with founding partners Salesforce and Deloitte. The platform sources new innovations through a competition framework known as Innovation Challenges. UpLink has run more than 30 challenges and identified over 260 entrepreneurs with innovative solutions for the world’s most pressing issues.
