[영국] 렌징, 그림스비 현장에 최첨단 폐수처리장 건설

세계 최고의 섬유 및 부직포 산업용 목재 기반 특수섬유 공급업체인 렌징그룹(Lenzing Group)은 영국 그림스비(Grimsby) 소재에 최신 폐수처리장을 새로 건설하기 위해 2천만 파운드(2천330만 유로 상당)을 투자하고 있다. 이 투자는 2022년까지 폐수 배출을 줄이려는 이 회사의 계획의 일부이다.

렌징(Lenzing)은 이 프로젝트를 시행하면 모든 생산 현장에 최고의 가용기술(BAT ; Best Available Techniques) 품질기준을 충족하는 생물학적 폐수처리장(biological wastewater treatment plant)을 갖출 예정이다. 연구과제의 일환으로 개발된 새로운 기술을 채택할 플랜트 설계는 영국 규제기관과 완전히 일치하며 현지 당국의 지원을 받고 있다.

렌징(Lenzing)의 라이오셀 링스비(Lyocell Gringsby) 운영책임자인 필 먼슨(Phil Munson)은 "이는 전체적인 렌징(Lenzing) 전략적 목표를 달성하기 위한 큰 진전이며 그림스비(Grimsby) 부지에 지속가능한 성장을 위한 견고한 플랫폼을 제공하기 위한 장기 계획의 이정표"라고 말했다.

현장의 현재 폐수 상황은 EU(유럽연합) 물 프레임워크 지침(Water Framework Directive)뿐만 아니라 모든 현지 법률과 규정을 완벽하게 준수한다. 이 투자는 감독위원회의 승인을 받아 올해 착공할 수 있으며, 영국 비준 EU 지침이 발효되기 전에 공장이 위탁될 수 있도록 보장한다. 기술혁신형 프리미엄 제품을 생산하는 리오셀 현장(lyocell site) 오픈 이후 최대 규모다.

■ 책임 있는 물 사용(Responsible water use)
인도네시아 푸르와카르타(Purwakarta) 사업장의 폐수처리장을 현대화한 뒤 그림스비(Grimsby)에 새로 처리장을 짓는 것은 그룹의 폐수 배출량을 2022년까지 20% 줄이는데 또 하나의 큰 발걸음을 내디뎠다.

책임감 있는 물 사용은 렌징(Lenzing)의 '자연 긍정(Naturally positive)' 지속가능성 전략의 핵심 요소 중 하나로, 물을 제조하고 최첨단 수처리 기술을 채용하여 주로 시행되고 있다.

렌징그룹(Lenzing Group)의 스테판 도보츠키(Stefan Doboczky) CEO는 "렌징(Lenzing)은 전략적인 핵심 분야마다 가장 중요한 과제에 대한 구체적인 지속가능성 목표를 세웠으며, 우리는 이를 매우 절제된 방식으로 추구하고 있다"고 말했다.

Lenzing Invests In State-Of-The-Art Wastewater Treatment At Grimsby Site

The Lenzing Group, a world-leading provider of wood-based specialty fibers for the textile and nonwoven industries, is investing GBP 20 mn (equal to EUR 23.3 mn) to build a new, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant at its site in Grimsby, United Kingdom. The investment is part of the company’s plans to reduce wastewater emissions by 2022.

Once it has implemented this project, Lenzing will have biological wastewater treatment plants that meet the best available techniques (BAT) quality standard at all its production sites. The plant design, which will employ a new technology developed as part of a research project, is fully aligned with the UK regulator and supported by the local authorities.

“This is a huge step forward in delivering the overall Lenzing strategic goals and a milestone in our long-term plan to give the Grimsby site a solid platform for sustainable growth”, says Phil Munson, Director Operations Lyocell Grimsby at Lenzing.

The site’s current wastewater situation complies fully with the EU Water Framework Directive as well as all local laws and regulations. The investment has been approved by the Supervisory Board, ensuring that construction can start this year and the plant will be commissioned well before the UK-ratified EU directive[1] goes into effect. This will be the largest investment since opening this lyocell site, which manufactures premium products for technical and innovative market segments, among other things.

Responsible water use
After modernizing the wastewater treatment plant at the company’s Purwakarta site in Indonesia, the construction of the new plant in Grimsby marks another big step toward reducing the Group’s wastewater emissions 20 percent by 2022 (against a 2014 baseline).

Responsible water use is one of the core elements of Lenzing’s “Naturally positive” sustainability strategy and is largely executed by using water efficiently in manufacturing and employing state-of-the-art water treatment technologies.

“Lenzing has set itself concrete sustainability targets for the most important challenges in every one of its strategic core areas, and we are pursuing them in a very disciplined fashion”, says Stefan Doboczky, Chief Executive Officer of the Lenzing Group.

“Lenzing has demonstrated quite impressively with this project that financial performance and corporate citizenship are not mutually exclusive but unlock synergies instead.”
