[미국] 매립국, WaterSMART 응용과학 프로젝트에 330만 달러 투자

 

 

미국 내무부 산하 연방기관 소속인 매립국(Reclamation)의 브렌다 버먼(Brenda Burman) 국장은 매립국이 기술적 역량을 구축하는 워터스마트(WaterSMART) 내부 응용과학 도구를 위한 21개 프로젝트에 330만 달러를 투자할 것이라고 발표했다.

버먼(Burman) 국장은 "이러한 응용 과학 도구를 통해 얻은 정보는 개간과 우리의 파트너들이 가변적인 수문학적 조건 하에서 최적의 물 관리를 위해 가장 가용한 과학을 사용할 수 있게 될 것"이라고 말했다.

이 프로그램은 서부 지역의 안정적인 물공급 및 공급을 촉진에 관한 대통령의 지원 약속을 충족시키기 위한 내무부의 약속을 지원한다.

이 프로젝트는 뉴멕시코와 서부 전역의 저수지들을 지원한다. 지역 기후와 물리적 과정을 시뮬레이션하는 알려진 모델을 구현하여 코끼리 부테 저수지(Elephant Butte Reservoir)를 가로지르는 일일, 월별, 연간 증발량을 추정하기 위해 19만9천764달러를 지원받게 된다.

이러한 추정치는 대체 추정치와 비교된다. 그 결과는 알부커키(Albuquerque) 지역 사무소가 운영을 지원하고, 방법 비교를 용이하게 하고, 주제에 대한 미래의 계획, 운영 및 연구 요구를 식별하기 위해 사용된다. 대체 증발 추정 기법의 개발, 저수지에서의 일일 증발시간 시리즈의 생산, 날씨 예측 모델링 능력 확대에 도움이 될 것이다.

아리조나주의 또 다른 프로젝트는 투손(Tucson) 북동쪽 아라바피파(Aravaipa) 유역의 강수량 및 토양 감시 정보를 향상시키기 위해 20만 달러를 지원받게 된다.

현재 유역 내 기상 관측소는 2곳뿐이다. 이 프로젝트에는 강수량 및 토양 습기를 모니터링하기 위한 2개의 관측소를 설치하는 것이 포함되는데, 이는 천연자원보존 서비스 예측 모델과 미국 지질조사국 지표수 모델을 더 잘 알려 줄 것이다.

이 프로젝트에서 제안된 작업은 매립지 및 지역 파트너들이 홍수 위험, 가뭄, 침식 및 수질 문제를 예측하고 이러한 물관리 문제에 대한 더 나은 계획을 세우는 데 도움이 된다.

응용 과학 도구는 워터스마트(WaterSMART) 프로그램의 일부분이다. 워터스마트(WaterSMART)를 통해 매립은 주, 부족, 지방 자치단체와 협력하여 기존 기반시설 현대화 투자와 지역 물 갈등에 대한 관심을 통해 급수 신뢰도를 높이기 위한 조치를 계획하고 시행한다.

Reclamation Invests $3.3M For Internal Applied Science Projects To Improve Modeling, Forecasting And Data Tools

 

 

The Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Brenda Burman announced that Reclamation will invest $3.3M in 21 projects for WaterSMART Internal Applied Science Tools that build technical capacity within Reclamation.

"Information gained from these applied science tools will allow Reclamation and our partners to use best-available science for optimal water management under variable hydrologic conditions," Commissioner Burman said.

 "The projects announced today will help inform specific water management decisions throughout the West."

This program supports the Department of the Interior’s commitment to meeting the President's Memorandum on Promoting the Reliable Supply and Delivery of Water in the West.

A project will assist New Mexico and reservoirs throughout the West. It will receive $199,764 to implement a known model to simulate regional climate and physical processes to estimate daily, monthly and annual evaporation across Elephant Butte Reservoir.

These estimates will be compared to alternative estimates. The results will be used by the Albuquerque Area Office to support operations, to facilitate method comparison and identify future planning, operational and research needs on the topic.

It will help with the development of alternative evaporation estimation techniques, production of daily evaporation time series at a reservoir and a broadening of weather prediction modeling capabilities.

Another project in Arizona will receive $200,000 to enhance precipitation and soil monitoring information in the Aravaipa watershed northeast of Tucson.

Currently, there are only two weather stations within the watershed. The project includes the installation of two stations to monitor precipitation and soil moisture, which will better inform the Natural Resources Conservation Service forecasting models and United States Geological Survey surface water models.

The work proposed in this project will help Reclamation and local partners predict flood risk, drought, erosion, and water quality concerns and better plan mitigation of these water management issues.

A third project will receive $120,000 to do predictive modeling to generate maps of invasive quagga and zebra mussel risk.

The results will allow Reclamation to dedicate limited resources to high-risk locations and prepare facilities for potential control costs.

Applied Science Tools are part of the WaterSMART Program. Through WaterSMART, Reclamation works cooperatively with states, tribes and local entities as they plan for and implement actions to increase water supply reliability through investments to modernize existing infrastructure and attention to local water conflicts.
